On Passover,  don’t forget that its the little glimmery holiday touches that add to the WOW factor of your table. One of my favorite  Judaica Designers is Laura Cowan who is constantly inspired by the natural beauty of  the land of Israel’s dreamy sea and sky. I recently contacted Laura to asks her about her inspirations, and I was immediately drawn into the way that she was able to translate her passion for outer space into her gorgeous moon inspired Seder Plate featured below.

I was so impressed to hear that it has been featured  in Bon Appetit and  Epicurious.com. (If you’d really like to be impressed, scroll down to the bottom of the page to see all of the galleries and museum shops that her work is featured in.)

According to Laura, “I had an image of moon craters in my head but I didn’t know how I was going to make this design until I started experimenting with different types of metals, thickness of metal and shapes. Each time I would adjust the type or thickness of the metal, or the size and depth of the indentations until I got a look closest to what I had imagined. Although because the dips are made by hand, each one turns out slightly different.”

When I asked her about the materials that she used, she said  “I chose aluminum because the shapes came out softer than steel but more defined than on brass. Also I love the bright, white, mirror finish that doesn’t tarnish. To make sure it was user friendly I tried out several types of chrane to check that it didn’t leave a stain (it doesn’t!)”

“Most of my work is about vertical lines – “weightless” rockets and cones shooting up into space.
I knew that for a matzah plate that these motifs wouldn’t work because a plate is of course, horizontal by nature.
I had designer’s block for months until I realized that every time I had been cycling on the “tayelet” (promenade) I had been gazing at the shapes of the yachts on the Mediterranean sea and the fishing boats in Old Jaffa’s harbor. So back in my studio, I curved pieces of highly polished steel to reflect the ocean waves and the sails that glide upon it.
I wanted the piece to look like a piece of sculpture so I used hidden magnets so that the waves can be placed anywhere on the plate.”
I want all of my hostesses to know that these Judaica pieces are even more gorgeous in person, and we recently sold them at a community event.
Dozens of  Laura’s seder plate and napkin holders were purchased so quickly that we had to re-order them on the spot.
Many women bought two matzo holders so that they could place  each one on each end of their holiday tables.
I asked Laura if she could offer my Jewish  Hostess readers a discount, and if you order ASAP  you can take 5% off the price on the checkout page.
Your discount will be reflected on your credit card statement as her website does not discount out automatically.
Make sure you write 5%Jewish Hostess on the checkout page.
Wishing you a happy and healthy holiday, and send me pics of your beautiful seder tables! email to my photos@thejewishhostess.com.

The six words in Hebrew which represent the symbols on this Silver and Aluminium Wave Seder Plate and Laura’s round seder plates, are hand cut by Laura. Avoiding the use of soldering, all the components of the Pesach Seder Plate are screwed together in a style reminiscent of Bauhaus, affording a clean look, and preserving the smooth finish of the metal.

The Silver Wave Seder Plate beholds an elegant, classic yet modern design. Taking almost a year to complete, it incorporates four unique layers. The top layer consists of a silver platter and 6 silver dishes with three layers underneath for the three Seder matzos. Three matzot are needed so that when we break the middle matzah, we are still left with two whole ones to pronounce the “Hamotzi”. These layers represent the three components of the Jewish nation: Cohen, Levy and Israel. The flowing effect of the six dishes on the silver layer gives the illusion of them floating just above the surface.
