Every Jewish holiday gathering brings an opportunity to spend time with those we love, teach our kids to appreciate their rich Jewish culture and heritage, and reflect on how the symbols and messages that are associated with the holiday apply to our day to day life. In my case, that is also an opportunity to bring out my creative side! Elaborate tablescapes and place settings with symbols of the holiday appease my inner theme junky, and add a fun and festive personal touch for my guests.

Rosh Hashana is packed with theme potential ranging from the tangible to the philosophical. As I write this, my mind is swirling with ideas for this year – first night is less than a week away! For inspiration, I “research” online, browse the latest at my favorite home goods stores, and go back to my tablescapes of yesteryear.

Last year, I found beautiful and inexpensive yin and yang dishes that not only represented balance and cycle of life, but were also the perfect vehicle for my apples and honey! Colorful linen napkins folded into lotus flowers symbolized the freshness of our Jewish New Year , and various exotic fruit - representing newness and new experiences upon which we recite shehechiyanu - made for perfect name card holders. The rest of the table was adorned with big platters of more “new fruit”, fresh flowers, and candles in colorful votive holders.
