This past summer, the Morris I Franco Cancer Center sponsored their annual spectacular women’s table decor fundraiser at the home of Millo and Sam Haddad. Several teams of talented women volunteered their time and efforts to create spectacular table setting themes that wowed the hundreds of women who attended the seaside event. One of the incredible tables was set by Diane Azrak Massry, Cheryl Azrak, Annie Azrak and Frieda Azrak. Starting off with a siddur and a bar-mitzvah tallit  that was handcrafted in Israel, the women chose a Bar Mitzvah table theme for their table setting decor display. This Bar Mitzvah table showcased a blend of our mid eastern Jewish tradition with a modern American flair . Homemade  Syrian pastries such as ras-ib-adjweh (date-filled pastry) and graybeh(buttery cookie topped with a pistachio),  reminiscent of a “zeeyada” or festive occasion celebrated in a Syrian Jewish home, were placed delicately atop a golden tray, while mid-eastern patterned gilt   dinnerware and goblets added to the ambiance of the setting. The gold rimmed colored glass liquor cups are antique finds, and the Moroccan style hurricane lamp was borrowed from Parci Parla Home. The final sweet touch was the triple set of  bar-mitzvah teffilin, torah, and tallit cakes cakes that were artfully baked by Violet Fallas. One of the most exciting parts of the day was having Amy Atlas of Amy Atlas Events come judge the table settings of the day. Stay tuned for the rest of the team’s photos! Here is the Chanel themed table that was posted previously, and  click here for the link to Table Set Go from the summer of 2011.

This past summer, Millo and Sam Haddad hosted the annual Table Set Go competition benefitting the SBH Morris I. Franco Community Cancer Canter in the seaside town of Elberon, N.J.

The Community Cancer Center is a tremendous resource for so many families in our community. Please watch the video above for amazing inspiration that may be of value to share with someone you know. For confidential assistance or any questions that you may have, please call the Community Cancer Center at (718)787-1800.

At the Table Set Go Event of 2012, several teams of talented and creative women competed to win the title of “Most Creative Table” by the well known queen of dessert bars, Amy Atlas.

The first dazzling table of the day, was styled by Robin Braca, Rachel Khafif, and Jill Khafif. This ladies tea, inspired by the one and only Coco Chanel, got oohs and ahhhs from all the women who flocked over to this classic setting. Upon first glance, you would think that this million dollar look cost a bundle, but when I interviewed these pretty ladies, I was so pleasantly surprised to hear that the white ceramic dishes were purchased from Marshalls, and the inexpensive chargers were from Macy’s. They didn’t hold back their table setting secrets as they described how they beaded  pearls by Bead World one by one to border each charger, and sewed each napkin ring individually with camellias from M and J Trim in Manhattan. They even effortlessly pressed pearls into rolled fondant to create a cake that Coco herself would have been proud to put on her plate!

Flatware – by Diane Von Furstenburg from Neiman Marcus.

Stay tuned for a new peek at another table setting from the event every week!

Amy Atlas’s Sweet Peanut Butter Bars After Dinner Treat

Amy Atlas’s Sweet Peanut Butter Bars After Dinner Treat

No Comments 06 June 2012

This instant ready dessert by Amy Atlas is a real after dinner dairy treat. Its also the perfect “chill and wrap” hostess gift that will be gobbled up by kids and adults alike.

Make sure you cut all of the squares evenly. I like to cut these peanut butter treats on the diagonal to form a diamond shape. Enjoy! Marlene

  • Ready Time : 0 min

Servings

32 1-inch squares

Ingredients

  • 2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 18 tablespoons unsalted butter or Earth Balance divided into 12 tablespoons melted and 6 tablespoons softened
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ⅜ teaspoon salt
  • 4 ounces good-quality semisweet chocolate such as Ghirardelli, finely chopped
  • ⅜ cup heavy cream

Directions

1. In a medium bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, the 12 tablespoons of melted butter, and the granulated sugar and stir until the crumbs are thoroughly moistened. Firmly press into bottom of a 9- × 9-inch baking pan. Use the bottom of a measuring cup to help press the crust down.

2. In the bowl of a standing mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, mix the peanut butter, confectioners’ sugar, vanilla, salt, and the 6 tablespoons of softened butter until completely combined. Spread over graham crust and smooth the top with an offset spatula. Chill until set, at least 1 hour.

3. Meanwhile, heat the chocolate and cream in a medium microwave-safe bowl, stirring with a whisk every 30 seconds, until chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth. Pour the chocolate over the peanut butter filling and evenly spread with an offset spatula. Jiggle the pan to smooth out the chocolate. Chill until set, about 1 hour. Using a hot, wet knife, cut into 1-inch squares and arrange on a rimmed tray filled with multicolored candy.

“Hi Marlene,

  • I made the cupcakes with pink frosting and a cherry on top just like the ones in the Pinkalicious story book.
  • For the cake pops I used a mold to make the cupcake shapes and then dipped into the chocolate. For the tuna and cream cheese sandwiches I ordered the pink bread from a local bakery and cut into shapes.
  • I made my regular samboosak recipe and added pink gel food coloring.
  • The kids loved having all the pretty shapes and the pink food.
  • I also had pink buttered noodles which was not photographed because it wiped out too fast !”

Grandma Joyce Wolf put a lot of detailed touches to this sugar sweet event for the first “Joyce” granddaughter in the family. I’m especially loving the height variations on the shades of rosy pink dessert table, the hanging ballet slippers from the chandelier, the lacy pink placemats peeking through the clear glass trays, the individual fruit cups, the personalized tulle wrapped cookies, the melt in your mouth cotton candy cones, the chocolate multi colored drizzled strawberries, and the melange of pink candies in an array of glass containers. What did I leave out??? Comment below! Marlene

A Winter White Engagement Party by Paula Benz

“Hi Marlene,

For my engagement, the theme was white and black with silver accents. (you can’t really tell from just the dessert table!) It Couldn’t have been done without the help of party planner Yvette Hanan she really is amazing at what she does. As for desserts, bakers Shirley Mamiye and Mari Gindi made individual brownies, napoleons, cupcakes, tiramisu, sugar cookies and more… The marzipan desserts featured in this pic were all custom ordered  and brought in by my family from Panama. Paula Benz”

A beautiful flower and dessert showcase. Flat glass squares can be bought at Ikea or custom made to fit your table top needs. They they be used over and over in so many different types of party themes because they serve the purpose of display without distracting from the decorative and colorful food, dessert, and floral array. Thanks, Esther!

“Hi Marlene,

Here is a dessert bar I made for a Bar Mitzvah recently. I baked the desserts, arranged the flowers and used glass canisters and sheets to display the desserts. Enjoy,

“Hi Marlene,

For my shower, my mom and I worked day and night putting it all together. I knew I wanted to have a candy bar and got tons of inspiration from Amy Atlas site.  Desserts were made by Shirley C. Mamiye and Mari Gindi. My invitation was hot pink and zebra and the entire party stemmed from there. From table cloth, to flowers, to finding hot pink (and only hot pink) candy!, we worked really hard to tie it all together. Paula Benz”

“My sister loved  feathers, so we tried to incorporate the colors of the invitation, which was pink and black, and make it an elegant night out for the ladies who came. We draped the tables with black table cloth and pink organza on top. On the dessert table we created the illusion of floating plates. We stacked square mirror chargers over glass cups to look like it was floating and flooded the table with rose petals. On the table we also put two black vases which we draped with pink beads and topped with feathers. Nellie Esses”

Happy First Birthday- Baby Susan!

12 Comments 10 December 2011

Meet my talented niece Ruth Gindi! You may think that this party was personally decorated by Amy Atlas herself, but Ruth single handedly pulled off this fabulous DIY  first birthday party for her little daughter in less than two weeks. When I was a kid, I was lucky if I got a birthday sponge cake layered with cherry and pineapple jam-(why on earth did my mom keep choosing those um….. yummy flavors??), and some balloons plastered onto the ceiling, but it seems that those memories are fading fast as we speed up to 2011!!!

Modern moms like Ruth Gindi take the cake when it comes to entertaining nowadays!! Ruth whisked through many gourmet kosher cookbooks for her party menu,  but mentioned that she was especially inspired by Kosher Elegance, the new gorgeous cookbook by Efrat Libfroind. She also personally printed out all of the party invites and girly food printables at home on her printer.

So excited to post these pictures- thanks Ruth! Gorgeous job!!!  Love, Auntie Marlene

“Hey Aunt Marlene !

Here are a few pictures from my daughter’s 1st birthday party. The theme was bows of course! And everything was decorated pink and white.
The menu was kid friendly as well as adult friendly…
roasted corn salad, exotic cabbage salad,
veggie burgers with chummus, wheatberry salad,
fig, goat cheese and carmelized onion pizzas, tri color tomato salad ,
roasted veggie wraps, Fred’s salad,
tri color sandwich stacks,
sambusak, spanach jiben Syrian recipe for spinach and cheese muffins), bow- tie noodles, baby pizzas
strawberry yogurt with granola, and berry salad.
Some of my desserts were:
cheesecake pops, chocolate covered strawberries,
bow shaped chocolate lollypops, pink rice krispy treats,
french macaroons, merengues, mini cupcakes,
White chocolate fruit cream dream, and much more!!
I purchased downloads on Etsy.com for all the food labels, straw flags and giveaway boxes.
I also wrapped each glass cube or vase I was using in pink ribbon and finished it off with a bow to carry out the theme.
The number 1 centerpiece was made by the new Ave P and East 3rd florist. He was very well priced!
I had so much fun planning and  decorating this party!! Hope you enjoy the pictures!

Amy Atlas’s Secret Tips to Designing Your Own Dessert Bar

kosher dessert recipes, parties

Amy Atlas’s Secret Tips to Designing Your Own Dessert Bar

3 Comments 18 February 2011

Check out these gorgeous kosher dessert bars designed by the  famous NYC entertaining diva Amy Atlas.

Thank you Amy  for sharing your sweet kosher dessert design tips with Jewish Hostesses all over the globe!

A note to all our readers- Amy designs kosher dessert bars for all occasions including brit milahs, bar and bat mitzvahs, bridal showers, weddings, and any other happy occasion that you can dream up!

Amy’s tips for designing your own Kosher Dessert bar:

  • Take something that inspires you and create your dessert table around it. The design can be inspired from something as personal as a family heirloom to as simple as the pattern on the host’s invitation. Let the dessert table tell a story about the event so that the dessert not only becomes functional, but becomes part of the event design.

  • Create a beautiful backdrop for your dessert table. Décor elements complete the look of a dessert table and a fabulous backdrop is the perfect way to incorporate artistry to the table.

  • Pick beautiful linens and unique vessels to dress up your kosher dessert table. Since your sweets will be the star of your dessert table, the linens and vessels should have a coordinated, tailored look.

  • Always sample your dessert vendors before using them for your event. A beautiful cake is not always the best tasting cake! The key is to find the right balance. Pick kosher desserts that not only look good together, but provide a balance for your guests’ palate.

  • Incorporate some type of signage to dress up the dessert table. This will show your guests how personal your kosher dessert table is. You can have your stationer create personalized tags for you.
  • Provide goody bags for your guests as take-home desserts. It is always a treat to give your guests something to take home to remind them of how sweet the day was.

Amy’s favorite shops/online destinations for supplies:

“I love Michaels, Kate’s Paperie, and Lee’s Art Shop for supplies,

Crate and Barrel (www.crateandbarrel.com) is great for platters and vases.”

One of Amy’s favorite Kosher Dessert Recipes (something easy/fun to make): –

Chocolate chip peanut butter cookies or bars – I’m a huge chocolate peanut butter lover!

    • 2 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
    • 1 cup peanut butter
    • 1 cup butter, melted
    • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
    • 2 3/4 cups confectioners’ sugar

In a medium bowl, stir together graham cracker crumbs, confectioners’ sugar, peanut butter and melted butter. Press firmly into the bottom of a 9×13 inch pan. Melt chocolate chips over a double boiler or in the microwave, stirring occasionally. Spread melted chocolate over the crumb crust. Chill for about 5 minutes, then cut into bars before the chocolate is completely set, then chill until ready to serve.

Amy Atlas is a coveted entertaining expert, baking and crafting stylist, and is internationally recognized for creating the stylized dessert bar trend.  Amy’s work has appeared multiple times in InStyle Magazine, Parents Magazine, Better Homes & Gardens, The New York Times, Every Day with Rachael Ray, The Los Angeles Times, Food and Wine Magazine, Life & Style, Gotham, New York Magazine, Martha Stewart Weddings, Brides, and many more.  Her work has appeared on thousands of top US and international entertaining and lifestyle blogs.
