Aryana in Wonderland Bridal Shower by the Beach

7 Comments 20 June 2013

Thank you Mikhayla Bibi for submitting these gorgeous bridal shower pics! Now I’m officially ready to get into the summer wave of entertaining. Not only can we use this Alice in Wonderland theme as bridal inspiration, but of course we can juice up some ideas for serving blue sky desserts and breezy beverages. Note the mason jars for lemonade with the easy to make labels attached with twine, the scooped out mouth watering watermelon, mini lattice apple pies, pops of colorful seating, and more! Enjoy! xoxo

“Hi Marlene,

The theme for the bridal shower was Alice in Wonderland. Set up both inside and outside, the inside table was covered in green grass tablecloth filled with Alice toys, flowers, decks of cards, fun desserts, and a “falling” cake by Keren Greenberg.
As each guest walked into the party, a Polaroid photo was taken of them and hung up on a string crisscrossing over the main table.
Outside, a long white table and a red chair from Artistic Frame. The white table was covered in bright colored platters filled with both food and desserts by Mikhayla Bibi.
Detail had been particularly implemented by Chantelle Bibi who has experience as a set designer and Lauren Bibi, the graphic artist known for her work with Ldecor Design; the watermelon teacup, the Alice in wonderland decks of cards, the pink lemonade in mason jars each tied with their own “Drink Me!” cards, the clock tables, and more.
And it didn’t hurt that, Thank Gd, that it was a beautiful day as we sat in “Aryana’s Wonderland”

Sheva Berachot, Bridal Shower, or Mother’s Day Themed Berry Filled Heart Cake

5 Comments 26 April 2013

Bridal Shower Cake, Sheva Berachot Cake, The Jewish Hostess

This is a wonderful and easy romantic berry cake that any level baker can whip up like a pro. I am hosting a Sheva Berachot next week and this cake is tops on my dessert menu.  Save this in your desserts folder for any heart shaped themed dessert such as Mother’s Day, a Bridal Shower, and Sheva Berachot. I would also cut out a dreidel shape for Hanukka, or triangle for Purim. Why not? The fillings are unlimited too! Use a tree shape for Tu bishvat and mound with new fruits and voila! You’ve got your own unique dessert creation! Have fun and send me your fruit filled cakes- I would LOVE to see what you’ve come up with!

p.s.- This cake is also a perfect pre-Passover excuse to start baking up the Hametz ingredients in the kitchen…

Many thanks to  Emanuelle my Jewish Hostess Instagram follower from London (!) for sharing this fabulous recipe. Check out her blog www.manusmenu.blogspot.com.

Sheva Berachot Berry Filled Heart Cake

Sheva Berachot Berry Filled Heart Cake

Ingredients

  • 11/2 cups superfine sugar
  • 11/2 cups softened butter (margarine/dairy free butter)
  • 4 eggs beaten
  • 11/2 cups self raising flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tbsp milk soya milk
  • for filling:
  • 1 cup butter/dairy free butter
  • 1 cup icing sugar
  • strawberry jam
  • (To make icing mix together butter and icing sugar in a food processor)
  • red berries of your choice

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat oven to 180 Degrees C or 350 Degrees F.
  2. Mix all cake ingredients together. (Make sure eggs are beaten before hand and butter is beaten before hand). Make sure the mixture is smooth and there are no lumps.
  3. Grease two round 8 inch cake trays.
  4. Bake for 20 - 25 minutes or until golden brown.
  5. While the cakes are in the oven, take an A4 piece of paper and fold it in half.
  6. Draw half of a heart on one side of the fold.
  7. Cut out the drawn half heart shape while the paper is still folded. You should come out with a heart shape.
  8. When the cakes have baked and cooled, CAREFULLY remove them from their cake trays and place them on a large flat surface.
  9. Place the heart stencil on the top side of one of the cakes. Carefully, with a sharp knife, cut around the shape. Make sure the cake is fully cooled. (You might want to keep your icing in the refrigerator until needed).
  10. Evenly spread a medium layer of icing on the other piece of cake.
  11. Spread jam on top of the icing, but leave centre (where heart will be) without jam.
  12. Gently and carefully place the cut-out-heart piece of cake (with a large spatula and help from a friend if possible!) on top of the other piece.
  13. Make sure it is placed evenly (and the heart actually looks like a heart!)
  14. Pour the fresh red berries in to the heart shaped 'hole'.
  15. Sprinkle with icing sugar. Enjoy!

British Themed Bridal Shower by Daniella Salem

What a stunning bridal shower! Thanks for sending in these photos, Nathalie! Im loving how your “mum” used the patten of the British flag to line the fabulous cupcakes, cake pops, and desserts! Love the umbrella invitation, and fish and chips too. The colors happen to be such a bright and gorgeous contrast. I’m sure it looked “smashing”!

Marlene

Hi Marlene,

My mum, Daniella Salem, made me the most amazing shower when I was getting married last year. The theme was British because I grew up there. The invitation was an umbrella because it always rains there. Everything was red, white and blue and she even made fish and chips to stick with the theme! But the most spectacular part was the dessert table which was covered completely in flowers with white desserts only. It was the most magnificent shower! She used the center flower strip for a gorgeous table later in the week. No one does it like my mum :) Best,

Nathalie (Salem) Galapo

Berta’s Award Winning Movie Themed Bridal Shower

Thank you Berta Naftali for sharing your very special bridal shower with us! I love the movie theatre theme, and how you coordinated the desserts, flowers and candies.

Little details like how you flipped over your white lucite trays to add height and a more modern touch makes all the difference. Using your glass table without a cloth is also another great look. Red, black and white are a classic big hit color combo. Your bridal shower truly wins an Academy Award!

Marlene

“Hi Marlene,
These are some pictures of my movie themed bridal shower. To start, we gave out mini popcorn buckets for our invitation. We had a candy table to mimic the consession stands at the movie theater. There were raisenets, Milk Duds, Dots, Mike ‘n Ike, Twizzlers,  Crunch a Bunch ; all the candys you buy at the theaters.

The desserts were made by Mari Gindi.

My center peice cake, was made by my sister in laws. All desserts were made around the theme and the colors black white and red. My mother and I really worked hard to put it all together!!”

Dear Hostesses, Enjoy these fresh themes for this couture styled bridal shower created by the ever talented Kim Kushner and Shirley Serure. These girls have an entertaining arsenal of ideas and I’m so glad that they shared them with us! Thanks girls! Marlene

“There’s nothing like a house party. Especially when it comes to bridal showers.  No matter the shape or size, a party will always feel most intimate when it’s at home. Yes, hosting a party in your home is probably going to be more work than holding it elsewhere, but when the party is in your home, it really reflects who you are- your taste, your style. And isn’t home where the heart is, after all? A few weeks ago I hosted a bridal shower for my future sister-in-law. It was a wonderful brunch for about 30 wonderful women. I decided not to go the usual bagels and lox route, instead I served lots of beautiful fresh salads , and an Asian salmon. The food seemed to go over very well, but the dessert table really stole the show.  In my opinion, it’s all in the details. You can have the most mouth-watering desserts, but if they aren’t set up in a beautiful way, you simply are not doing them justice. To display my desserts, I pulled out all the square or rectangular glass vases that I had saved. Colorful fruit in glass square vases contrasted the sharp white meringues and chocolate drizzled macaroons. Little towers made up of brownies, hello dolly squares and biscotti lined my kitchen island. And of course, a fun cake was the center of attention.  The cake made by Alexandra Zohn a pastry Chef and owner of Three Tablespoons, became the table’s centerpiece as I elevated it by placing it up top a large square glass vase. Displaying your desserts on different levels truly creates a showcase, rather than having all the desserts placed flat out on the table. The little touches become the most touching: hot pink personalized napkins, a glass beverage server (you can find them online) filled with water that’s been flavored with lemon and orange slices and some fresh mint leaves, glasses of Mimosas garnished with a frozen raspberry….  And, of course, every great party needs a great party favor- in this case, personalized bottles of Rose (I forgot to hand them out, but that’s besides the point!). The truth of the matter is, that it can’t only look good, but it all has got to taste as good as it looks. And, I can proudly say that the ladies went crazy for my miniature peanut butter cups, my fig biscotti, and my mother-in-law’s divine carrot cake.  I’ve never seen such drop-dead gorgeous women stand around my apartment scarfing down cookies and cake-and nothing makes me happier!

“Hi Marlene,

  • I made the cupcakes with pink frosting and a cherry on top just like the ones in the Pinkalicious story book.
  • For the cake pops I used a mold to make the cupcake shapes and then dipped into the chocolate. For the tuna and cream cheese sandwiches I ordered the pink bread from a local bakery and cut into shapes.
  • I made my regular samboosak recipe and added pink gel food coloring.
  • The kids loved having all the pretty shapes and the pink food.
  • I also had pink buttered noodles which was not photographed because it wiped out too fast !”

“Hi Marlene,

For my shower, my mom and I worked day and night putting it all together. I knew I wanted to have a candy bar and got tons of inspiration from Amy Atlas site.  Desserts were made by Shirley C. Mamiye and Mari Gindi. My invitation was hot pink and zebra and the entire party stemmed from there. From table cloth, to flowers, to finding hot pink (and only hot pink) candy!, we worked really hard to tie it all together. Paula Benz”

“My sister loved  feathers, so we tried to incorporate the colors of the invitation, which was pink and black, and make it an elegant night out for the ladies who came. We draped the tables with black table cloth and pink organza on top. On the dessert table we created the illusion of floating plates. We stacked square mirror chargers over glass cups to look like it was floating and flooded the table with rose petals. On the table we also put two black vases which we draped with pink beads and topped with feathers. Nellie Esses”

Pear, Grape, Mesclun and Feta Salad recipe plus Betty’s Bridal Shower

1 Comment 21 June 2011

My friend Shelly Orfali is one those friends that I don’t see very often but when we do bump into each other on Kings Highway, in Wendy’s Plate, at a wedding,  or in Aruba, we know that we are best friends at heart. I am so happy to post Shelly’s daughter Betty’s shower pics- Mabrook!!!!! Marlene

“Hi Marlene,

My daughter Betty loves to drink coffee so we decided that the theme for her shower should be a natural look with a burlap tablecloth that I bought online,  and coffee beans spilling out of white paper bags on the table.

I made all of the food except 1 or 2 items. The menu was: Samboosak, pizza, cheese balls, spanech jiben (cheese with spinach), Caeser salad, lo mein, pasta with pesto, purple cabbage salad, pear grape mesclun salad, salmon, brown rice with nuts, grilled vegetables, vegetable wraps, veggie burgers, avocado and tomato salad, stringbeans with almonds. Enjoy! Shelly”

Pear Grape Mesclun and Feta Salad:
Vinaigrette:

  • 2 tbs. Balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tsp minced shallot
  • 1 quarter cup of olive oil
  • Salt
  • Black pepper

Candied Almonds:

  • 1 and half cup slivered almonds
  • 2 third cup of sugar

Cover baking sheet with tin foil set aside. In a non stick skillet sprayed with pam, heat the almonds over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes to toast. Slowly add sugar, cook 8-9 minutes stirring constantly. The sugar will turn to a deep amber color do not burn. Remove from heat immediately and quickly spread the almonds onto baking sheet. Separating them so they don’t stick together.

Salad:

  • 5 cups mesclun mix
  • 2 cups arugula
  • 2 pears cored and cubed
  • 1 cup red grapes halved
  • 1 handful of craisins
  • 1 and 1 half ounces of feta cheese or goat cheese crumbled

Mix all salad ingredients together. Add cranberries and cheese. Sprinkle with candied almonds and coat with the vinaigrette.

Enjoy!!

Paulina’s Bridal Shower- “Fashion 2010″

4 Comments 16 December 2010

My friend Esther Saada sent me these fabulous pictures from her daughter Paulina’s bridal shower.  I’m sure that you will enjoy the creativity and detail that went into this sweet and stylish event.- Marlene M.

“Paulina’s bridal  shower theme was sparked by a Dress A Bride charity  bake-off. Esther Chrem, (Paulina’s sister in law) called  Paulina and asked  if Paulina would like to come over and help come up with the theme of a cake for Esther to design for the charity. They spoke about what could be a cool, sharp new theme and they came up with “Fashion 2010″.  The bake off consisted of 4 teams of bakers. Each designed a beautiful cake, but Esther  Chrem won first place!

During the bake-off the attendees had the opportunity to bid on a cake, so of course I bid on the one that Esther baked and I won the bid! The bottom of the cake was a leopard animal print.  The second layer was black studded , and the next layer was a red Hermes crocodile bag. The top tier was a black studded Louboutin shoe. In the close up picture you can see  that Esther even wrote out the name inside the shoe and also made the red heel just like the original shoe! Surrounding the cake are fashion trends from 2010 such as the fingerless glove and the jeweled bib necklace. The cake was done with edible fondant, edible silver beads and edible rock candy.

To coordinate with the theme of the shower , Esther created  mini red Hermes handbag cookies, mini jeweled bib necklaces, and an assortment of shoe cookies. To pick up the red in the cake, I ordered flowers in red, and draped a leopard silk tablecloth topper over the table. I also scattered some pages from Vogue magazine, and photos of designer shoes and placed them around the table.Hope you enjoy these pics as much as I enjoyed hosting the shower!” Esther Saada
