The first day of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving fall on the same day this year- November 28th. This is a very rare alignment of the Jewish and secular calendars and will not happen again for another 78,000 years or so. Thanksgiving and Hanukkah have been merged a the holiday is being called Thanksgivukkah. I thought it would be a great challenge to come up with a dessert bar that incorporates both holidays. It was actually quite fun to mix pumpkins, dreidels, menorahs and gelt all together! I hope you will like this unlikely combination and feature it in your blog!”

Enjoy this Rosh Hashanah inspiration from 2011….

Feast your eyes on this colorful and daring Rosh Hashanah holiday table that Candy Gabbay whipped up after dashing to the Missoni Target sale last week! Candy is constantly ahead of the trends, it’s no wonder that she pulled this hot table decor  together using a MISSONI SHOWER CURTAIN!!!

“Hi Marlene,

  Since the only thing I could find of Missoni in Target was a shower curtain, I had to buy it even though I didn’t need one! So, I decided to turn it into a table cloth and base my table settings around it! It’s so fun and colorful, just like me! I got so many comments on it as my BBM picture, so I decided to share it with your website. The photos are attached, if you have any problems opening it let me know!
  I put a solid black tablecloth first. Then took the Missoni reversible shower curtain and placed in center and folded sides up so you would see the black and white pattern along the edge of table. I bought flowers that coordinated with the colors on the curtain and placed them in small circular vases down center of table. Found the exact green from the cloth in plates at Amazing Savings and loved the cool shape. Added black and white napkins, a Missoni candle, and last but not least my outrageous challah cover that I needle pointed myself! As you can see I like color!”

Let’s Bring Tu Bishvat Into The 21 Century!

The holiday of Tu Bishvat (or Tu bishevat) always summoned to mind a couple of  boring dried fruits on a paper plate given to us as ten year old kids in yeshivah. It wasn’t really very exciting, and I particularly remember almost breaking a baby tooth as we tried to bite off a bit of the dried black hard-as-a-rock carob boxer strip that was touted as a special new fruit by our teachers. Being one of the producers of The Sephardic Heritage Museum film project, I had the honor of interviewing over 300 community members, many of whom remember celebrating the exciting holiday of Tu Bishvat way back in Syria. I was astounded to  hear that the now pandemonium holiday of Purim was a mere passing around of Syrian pastries like Samboosak and Graybeh to their neighbors, but Tu Bishvat or “Id Il Jar” (pronounced Eed El Jar- the holiday of trees) was the one holiday that the children and parents alike truly looked forward to. Every year, a month before the holiday, the moms started to sew luxe velvet bags with a drawstring that would soon contain exotic fruits that the children had never seen before. We take our pineapples, watermelons, and  mangos for granted nowadays, but I doubt that there were carts in the souk in Aleppo that exhorted these wonderful sweet new treats. I was told that it would take the adults weeks to seek out and save these fruits to excite the children and keep the memories of the Tu Bishvat holiday alive.

Upon speaking to one of my Tu Bishvat bakers (below), Margalit Dweck, I was astounded to hear that she and her husband have a Tu Bishvat dessert “seder” table every year on the eve of the holiday (this year Tu Bishvat falls on Friday evening, January 25, 2013). Rabbi Joe Dweck reads from the special Tu Bishvat book (photo below), points out the new fruits to his children, and recites the berachot. He proceeds to tell some Tu Bishvat stories, and the kids show off their Tu Bishvat art creations made in school. As a special treat, Margalit whips up a pomegranate martini shared by her and her husband.

Rabbi Joseph Dweck was kind enough to relay to me some Tu Bishvat fruit for thought. He mentioned the halachic aspect of how, when a Jewish person plants a fruit tree, he is not allowed to eat from it for three years, and of course the new year to begin counting begins every year on Tu Bishvat,(so if you planted a tree a month before Tu Bishvat- by the time TuBishvat rolls around 4 weeks later, that first year is already counted).

On an even more inspirational level, Rabbi Dweck explained our human connection to the trees, and how it even began with the story of Adam and Eve. The holiday of Tu Bishvat should inspire us to see the beauty and sweet flavor  of Hashem’s proud work- the wonderful shades of red, green, and orange… plus the abundant flavor and juiciness that exudes from each one of the fruits that our trees bear. Did you ever stop to think that we are similar to the trees? We try to  grow strong, establish rock solid roots, and try to bear beautiful fruits that we are be proud of – our children, hessed, mitzvoth, and our work.

My sister in law constantly tells me that I am truly an old soul, and a gnawing ache in my heart propels me to believe that she is right. As The jewish Hostess, I have planted myself into the awesome job of treasuring the old customs while adding a splash of modern hues and excitement to our holiday ambiance.

In my eyes, the holiday also serves as a reminder for how our country was built, all the hard work that went into it (and continues to go into it), all of the men and women who joined forces to create our homeland. The bags and tags below were hand stamped with a cherry blossom stamp  by moi! When Miriam told me that as a child in Mexico they would run into the house with wide paper bags on Tu Bishvat excited for their delicious new and dried fruits from their parents,(originally from Aleppo, Syria) they played a game of, “Who sees ‘Id Il Jar?” (the holiday of trees). And when the kids said- “WE SEE HIM!!!” They would fill up their bags with candy. Inspired by her story, I decided to recreate my own rendition below…..

My son just turned three years old and we cut his hair for the first time! To celebrate his birthday and upsherin we threw him a birthday party featuring some of his favorite things: trains, the Aleph Bet, and the color green! He was so excited to see all the décor! I wanted the kosher dessert table to be very bright and have a storybook feel, so I set it up in three tiers and had a train full of candy going up a hill. The train was made of cardboard boxes covered in scrapbook paper that I got from Amazing Savings! The cute Aleph Bet characters waved from the train car windows.

At the kids table, each child got a bandanna (which served as a placemat), a train whistle, a conductor’s hat, and a suitcase lunchbox personalized with plastic suitcase tags. On the table were adorable hard cover train shaped books- each family received one (also from Amazing Savings).

Besides for the food set up at the buffet table, the kids got some yummy and fun food in their suitcase lunchboxes: sandwiches in the shape of a train (cut with a cookie cutter), cheese, tomatoes, and olives on Aleph Bet picks that I made, and an apple juice box drink wrapped with a personalized wrapper.

I made some fondant covered Aleph- Bet decorated cookies that I scattered around the train cars. The faces were drawn with edible markers. I made a fondant covered train cake with bunting that said happy birthday.

For fun candy trees, I skewered sour belts onto toothpicks and stuck them into Styrofoam balls. I added the flower lollipops for you know, a little more sugar ;)

The kids loaded their suitcases with candy!  They also painted wooden trains that we glued onto their lunchbox suitcases, and they decorated the boxes with foam letters and shapes.

I’ll soon be posting on my blog free printables that you can download and print for yourself, like the juice box wrappers, the luggage tags, the book nametags…

perfect after dinner treat

Need a quick gift to bring to the seder?

There’s no need to run out to buy a last minute gift! Peanut brittle is an american classic that is loved by all. This recipe is inspired by the book, Sweet Tempation by Nicki Trench.

What makes it extra easy is that all you need is:

2 cups of sugar,

2 tablespoons of corn syrup,

1 cup of any kind of nut-roasted lightly

finely grated zest of an orange (optional)

Directions

1-Preheat oven to 350 degrees

2- Put sugar and corn syrup in heavy saucepan and heat with low flame until sugar has dissolved and reaches 270 degrees on a candy thermometer stirring continuously. (Honestly- I didnt have a candy thermometer handy so I just heated it till it was caramel consistency). Remove saucepan from flame and stir in nuts (and optional orange zest).

3-Pour syrup into a jelly roll pan and flatten with a spoon. Let cool.

4-When solid, break off pieces and store in an airtight container or wrap in cellophane bags and tie with a decorative ribbon or raffia.

-NOTE -This recipe contains corn, which is permissable for Sephardic Jews. Please consult with your rabbi.
