Hot Pink Candles for Mother’s Day

I bought these 2 foot hot pink tapers from my local florist the other day…. I LOVE the shot of life they add to my living room! I used to keep black candles in there that were Oh-So-Chic, but for spring these hot pink candles are just what I needed!


Of course I got the idea from Eddie Ross’s Bloomingdale’s window for Elle Decor:

Here Eddie Ross uses navy tapers in antique candles sticks. And here he uses yellow to tie in his brass candle sticks and amber glasses. 

I think this tablescape would be especially nice for Mother’s Day. You can buy similar candle sticks at CB2.

In Memory of Our Fallen Soldiers

Today, Sundy April 18 is Yom Hazikaron.

Yom HaZikaron is Israel’s memorial day for its fallen soldiers.

On the evening preceding Yom HaZikaron and again, in the morning, a siren wails throughout Israel and everyone pauses for the one minute duration of the siren. Traffic grinds to a halt, and both pedestrians and drivers stand at attention silently, contemplating the sacrifices made for this country still struggling for survival.

Throughout the country, special services are held in honor of the fallen soldiers. The military cemeteries overflow with grieving families and friends, and others wishing to pay their respects to heroes who gave their lives defending the State of Israel. It is a day commemorating the loss of all men and women who died for Israel, whether they served in the IDF, Israel’s armed services, or were victims of acts of terror.

Jews outside of Israel feel Israel’s loss too – as it says in the Talmud, “Kol Yehudim areivim zeh lezeh” (“All Jews are responsible for one another”). Many light memorial candles, give tzedaka (charity) or learn Torah on behalf of the fallen soldiers.

On July 17, 2008, Karnit Goldwasser, buried her husband  Ehud, captured two years earlier by the terrorist group Hezbollah.

This video is presented in honor of all of the wives and mothers who mourn Israeli soldiers today, and forever.

Delicious Cinnamon Raisin French Toast

Earth Day got me thinking about my every day cooking and my impact upon our earth. Each day I prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner for a growing family- and within a day or two I am almost always throwing out leftovers, fruits that I bought too much of, vegetables that I decided not to make…. How is all this waste impacting the environment? Here a few facts just to give you an idea of the food being wasted in America:

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), just over a quarter of the country’s food — about 25.9 million tons — gets thrown in the garbage can every year. It then costs the government 1 Billion dollars to dispose of all of this waste.

So tomorrow morning instead of throwing out my challah from Saturday Shabbat lunch, I will be making baked challah french toast!


1 loaf cinnamon raisin challah bread (Plain challah bread works great with this recipe as well)

3 eggs

2 cups whole milk (Sometimes I do one cup skim and one cup whole)

3 tsp. vanilla extract

1/4 cup sugar mixed with 1/2 tsp of cinnamon


Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Slice Challah bread in 2 inch thick slices  and place in pyrex that has been sprayed with pam.

Combine eggs, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl and pour over bread.  Let the bread soak up the mixture. Flip slices of bread and let it continue to soak up the mixture- this should only take a few minutes.

Sprinkle the cinnamon and sugar mixture over the bread.

Bake 20-25 minutes

Day 8 of Detoxing!

Hi Detoxers!

We made it thru a week Sugar Free!
Are you starting to feel lighter? Maybe have a little bit more energy?

Some notes: resist the urge to weigh yourself! Weighing yourself misses the point on where we are going with this. I know many of us want to shed pounds, but if we rely on the numbers of the scale to dictate to us how we should feel-we then will not be able to learn how to be in tune with how our bodies feel. Some days we wake up feeling awesome, energetic.  We may feel like we for sure dropped 2lbs. though the scale says we gained a half a pound. Our emotions then go up and down. There is enough stress in our lives that can send our emotions on a roller coaster. Its best not to self inflict it.
As a group, we weighed ourselves on Day 1 of Sugar Detox. We will weigh ourselves again on Day 30.
Let’s take a group promise to stay off the scale.
Say:” I will not weigh myself until Day 30 of the Challenge”

I hope you benefited from last nights e mail. Last April, I learned that my sugar addiction was a true addiction and not about a lack of will power. That’s what gave me the DESIRE to kick the habit.

“As a person who suffers from migraine and tension headaches often, I’m happy to report that for 8 days I have not had any headaches! I’m actually shocked and amazed at myself, how I’m even doing it.
I am (hopefully was) totally addicted and fully dependent on sugar, sugar substitutes and anything sweet.
Nothing was ever too sweet for me. When my kids would put something down and not eat it bc they said it was too sweet for them, I picked it up and ate it. I’m laughing at my breakfast this morning (oatmeal with strawberries and blueberry with a spoon of agave).
In my usual oatmeal, I would put 2 sweet n lows, brown sugar and pancake syrup! It sounds gross, but it really wasn’t too sweet for me. I hope to continue to be strong, and not have these cravings and desires anymore.
Sari- i was asking you on the holidays, “so if you can’t eat this, and you can’t eat that then, what can you eat?.”
I’m eating, and I’m satisfied, and I’m full…I just hope I lose weight with this :)

P.S. I made a huge batch of rice krispie treats for shabbat. And I did not have even one crumb of it! Its one of my many sweet favorites…I’m very proud!” Olga Schweky

Day 5 of OUR Sugar Detox Diet

My story: (part 1)

I recently changed my title from “group fitness instructor” to “group movement enthusiast”

The reasoning is simple. Whenever someone would ask me “what do you teach?” I would fumble.” I teach, cardio..kick box….core…smartbells….power ball..redefine…bosu..aquatic..intervals….etc.. I would try feverishly to explain what all those terms actually ment-until I would get frustrated and just give up.
So, hence the name, “group movement enthusiasts”, I simply enjoy body movement of all forms- oh and I snuk in the word “lifestyle” because  I incorporate a bit of life and style into each and every one of my classes.

Why change the name NOW?
In order for you to understand, I need to reveal my story- or at least part of it.

I have been instructing fitness based classes since I was 22..I’m now 42- so its been a while, though to me it feels like yesterday!

Throughout that time period, up until last year-April 22, 2009, I felt like a fraud. To better understand what I mean, I’d like to relate it to a popular movie.
Do you know that girl who was on trial for allegedly killing her husband on Legally Blonde with Reese Witherspoon? The one who wouldn’t give up her alibi to the courts because she was a well known aerobic instructor and  hid the fact that she was doing liposuction on her thighs while her husband was being murdered.  She would have rather have gone to jail than to reveal her secret!
I didn’t kill my husband (g-d forbid) and didn’t lippo  my thighs! What I did may seem small, but it was huge to me.
I would eat a bag of chocolate kisses, or a box of Entenmans chocolate chip cookies. I would buy Carvel on Wednesdays because it was buy one get one free and eat both! I was so down on myself because I am so educated in health and nutrition and didn’t want to put all that garbage into my body, yet I was constantly hurting myself with sugar laden foods.
I always felt like, “if they only knew” my gig would be up!  I was hiding behind a mask. I felt as if my students were judging me. Even though they obviously were not. I was judging myself. I took myself to court everyday. And instead of being honest, I choose to go to jail. Jail of secrecy.
I was not overweight because all the rest of my meals were super healthy and my exercising habits were amazing.  I knew I could keep my alibi.

On april 22, 2009 my life literally changed.

All because of the fact that I faced my worst fears.  Comming clean in front of my students of whom I so badly wanted them to think I was perfect.
The day I had let go of the facade of being perfect was the day perfection started to come my way!
I introduced a “30 Day Sugar Detox” and confessed that I knew nothing about it.
I was  learning with my students and was scared beyond belief. 30 days? It seemed like an eternity.  Reflecting on that time, I could see that what I DID have was extremely powerful. Even more powerful then I was aware of.
My desire to rid sugar out of my life completely or until I knew I had it under control.(More about that next time)

I feel proud of my title. Group Movement Lifestyle Enthusiast. I know I deserve it from passed experiences. I am proud of my all my accomplishments. We all have “stuff” to work on. For some of us the DESIRE is stronger than others. But I know now,  that if you have the DESIRE you will ACHIEVE anything you want.
I know that you can do “30 Day Sugar Detox Challenge!”
We are already on day 5!! Yay! You should feel proud already!

Some tips from feedback that I am receiving.

If you slip up-don t worry! Just get back on track. Make sure you have foods readily available.
The first time I did the challenge I was defiantly having withdrawals. My body was used to the sugar rush. I kept handy any snack that would keep me off cookies- like bananas, nuts, eggs. I am now accustomed to eating without needing that energy surge that sugar gives. My mood and energy level is more stable.
I hope my experience inspires YOU to make change for the better.

I was absolutely successful on Day 5.  Mind and body are feeling good.

Thank you Mary Setton for investigating our sushi dilemma. White rice sushi has sugar in it. Brown rice from the “sushi room” does NOT have sugar in its ingredients. Ask before you buy!

Can you go a day…. a week ….. or how about a month without eating sugar?
I did it and so can you!

As the Passover holidays culminate, we, as Jewish women are ready to give back to ourselves by focusing in on what our bodies need right now. So, if you have been thinking about making an empowering life changing event to improve your health and well being- then this “30 Day Sugar Detox Challenge” is for you.  Join me with hundreds of women to take control of their bodies, this Thursday, April 8th  as we will begin our “30 Day Sugar Detox Challenge.”

Your participation:
A. Comment below with your thoughts and share with all our “detoxers”  at TheJewishHostess.com.
B. Have an e-mail buddy to report to on a daily basis.  Everyday send to your supporter

Example… Hi Susie, this is Sari. I was successful on the first day of my challenge. I had all my meals prepared from the morning , which helped me to be successful thru out the day. My mind feels strong and determined! My body still feels bloated from the holiday. Speak to you tomorrow!

C. Weigh yourself Thursday morning April 8, and resist the temptation to weigh yourself until May 8. While weight loss is a give in, I want to draw our focus to health and wellness and not to the numbers on the scale.
D. Incorporate clean healthy balanced meals by using all the food groups such as protein, carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, and “good for you” fats.
E. Join me and all of our “Sugar Detoxers” on Friday morning, May 7th from 10-12   for a morning to celebrate our accomplishments with a free inspiring class experience.  RSVP….ASAP! (regardless of your ability to finish the challenge, everyone will be a winner!) (Brooklyn, NY area)

My mission for this “30 Day Sugar Detox Challenge”

TO LIVE A LIFE YOU LOVE IN A BODY YOU LOVE, by a heightened awareness of the foods we put into our bodies. Realizing that “what you DESIRE you can a will ACHIEVE!”

What to do today:

A. Eliminate simple sugars completely from your diet. Read labels! Manufactures hide the name “sugar” to fool us. The most common are called fructose and corn syrup.
B. Do not restock your pantry with all the sugary foods that you simply cannot resist.
C. Load your refrigerator and pantry with all fresh unprocessed foods.
D. Visit the health food store and check out foods that you might enjoy such as cereals and oatmeal. Ask for the healthiest sweetener available such as Agave.
E. Determine what staple foods you will be eating and make sure it is sugar free.
F. Take the time to plan and prepare your meals- this is the most important step to success!

Dos and Dont’s:

-Artificial food sweeteners are a don’t! They are chemical based and is the exact opposite of the health and wellness benefits that we are striving for.
-Adding sugar to your morning coffee is acceptable only if absolutely needed. (I am so thankful that I’m not a coffee drinker!)
-Do enjoy every combination of whole foods.
-Don’t fret the small stuff- if you falter, just get back on track immediately.
-Do have sweet whole foods on hand (especially the first week) such as sweet potatoes and bananas, even dried fruit, so when a sugar temptation strikes, you will be well equipped.
-Do have regular meals everyday. (breakfast, lunch dinner and snacks.)  Having regular spaced meals is an insurance plan  that will maintain stable blood sugar levels.
– Do know that for most of us, this challenge will be at times very difficult. But, feel assured that it does get easier as every day goes by.

My Sample Menu:

8:00;-oatmeal with Greek nonfat plain yogurt and berries
(if I’m teaching a class and then working out I drink apple juice)
12:OO; post workout; a repeat of 8 am meal or hard boiled eggs and banana
3:00;walnuts, lentil soup  or sweet potato and hard boiled eggs
6:oo; salmon, brown rice, vegetables or salmon brown rice sushi and vegetables
8:oo ; almonds and fresh dates
Note that I did not include quantities. I believe that you should eat until you are satisfied. This is what I like to eat, there are hundreds of great combinations of meals that will suit your taste buds that are healthy and sugar free.
