Healthy Shabbat Blueberry Crumble

8 Comments 10 October 2011

My cousin Sharon sent me this great  recipe a couple of months ago, and I decided to dig it up from the archives because so many of The Jewish Hostess readers loved it.Its so perfect for anyone looking for a last minute low sugar, healthy dessert for Shabbat. Serve with any flavor parve ice cream or Tofutti.

p.s. Have a great dish to share? send it over!- marlene@thejewishhostess.com .

Hi Marlene,

I made this for Shabbat two weeks in a row because everyone loves it so much, not so sweet and not so much oil.  This recipe is small (a 9X9 baking pan) so I made it larger, doubling the recipe exactly and it worked well in a 3 quart pyrex.  It gets cut into squares and served in a platter so the pyrex works well.

Again, best of luck with your website, you are doing an awesome job!!

Have a fabulous summer,

Sharon H.

Fail-Proof Ice Cream Brownie Cake Dessert- Pareve or Dairy

3 Comments 21 June 2011

Get out of the kitchen and on to the beach!!!

Here’s an easy and quick Shabbat dessert to make!

Let the kids do it!!

Can be made pareve or dairy

  1. Mix Brownie mix in an electric mixer. Pour only half the batter into springform pan and bake according to package directions.  (The other half of the mix can be baked separately and used for another time or can be used for topping).
  2. While brownie mix cools, soften two pints of ice cream of the same flavor. When soft enough to spread, quickly spread the ice cream evenly over the brownie mix and place in freezer.
  3. When that ice cream layer is frozen, spread the 2 pints of your other flavor over it. Garnish with your favorite topping and place back in freezer until ready to use.
  4. Any two flavors of ice cream can be used and there are endless ways to garnish it. I prefer crunch with some chocolate sauce, but you can use sprinkles, nuts, black and white chocolate chips etc.

Sugar Detox- Day 18!

2 Comments 19 May 2011

Hello Sugar Detoxers!

How are you doing? Today is Day 18 on our Sugar Detox. Is it getting hard for you to keep up this regimen of eliminating refined sugars? I’m sure that it is! It’s so unfortunate for us that the USDA named sugar as the number 1 food additive. It’s added to pizza, hot dogs, boxed rice, soup, crackers, flavored yogurts… We simply cannot get away from the substance that literally destroys lives. I know that is a bold statement to make- but it is a fact that becomes more clear as time passes. Newspapers and magazines   are making headlines on articles about sugar.  If we all know how bad sugar is for our health, don’t  you think that the American government would know this also? Wouldn’t it be amazing if the government put a ban on sodas and soft drinks. I know I am sounding idealistic and unrealistic, but before any reality there is always a dream. So lets keep dreaming!  How wonderful would it be if we no longer have to witness our children downing a can of Coke? It breaks my heart to know that going to a children’s birthday party means coming home with a candy bag that can basically feed the whole block.

As many times as we discuss the negative effects of sugar I can’t stress enough that this is real. This is an epidemic that is affecting America, yet we still allow it in our homes.

Let’s do an awareness experiment. Go into your food pantry and see how many items have sugar or white flour in the ingredients. It’s mind boggling how we bring this drug into our homes and actually serve it as food. My suggestion is to fill the fridge with the best high quality fruits and vegetables. Always have a platter cut and ready to eat, so when you or a family member is ready to munch- its there for you -ready to eat!

I know Sugar Detox is pushing the comfort level for many people. Honestly- its asking a lot from me! We are surrounded by sugar laden foods almost everyday  and are constantly troubled with trying to stay away from sugar.

Let’s create power in numbers! Let’s make a deal- if you stay away from all your sugar favorites, then I’ll stay away from my favorites! Let’s make this coming week, the best week that we can. If you cave in- don’t worry! Just get back on track right now. Eat whole foods and I know you will feel great, look awesome and help your health and wellness in its most natural way.

Skewering fresh fruits and vegetables is an easy way to make a simple food into something a little more special.

Check out Crate and Barrel and Pick on Us for great skewer finds.

Here’s a nice way to present fruit. When piled high it really looks great.

Garnish your favorite drink or smoothie with some fresh fruit. It can even dress up a simple glass of orange juice

Colorful vegetables always look great whether for a BBQ or just out of the oven

Fresh mozzarella with tomatoes and basil will dress up any table. And no cooking needed!

Day 27 of Our Sugar Detox!

healthy body

Day 27 of Our Sugar Detox!

1 Comment 07 May 2010

27 days of  eating with awareness is amazing!
Now what??

My story part 2:

I went on sugar detox last April on till September. During that time, I truly felt absolutely amazing. My mind was clearer. My eyes seemed wide opened all the time. I always thought that I needed a sugar snack for a “pick me up” but it was the exact opposite. Its was the lack of sugar that kept me  feeling refreshed, never going into that “slump”- (for me it was at 5:00 pm- when I would search for anything to get me thru the evening.)
Even though detoxing from sugar gave me an incredible boost of everything good, I wanted to know, for myself, that I can eat a portion of desert or sweets and not over do it. I intentionally re introduced sugar back into my body! I always envied people who took a bite of cake and pushed the rest aside, not wanting anymore. Or the person who can have a few M+M’s and feel satisfied. I wanted to be that person. So..I experimented from September until April in that manner. Testing the waters so to speak on where I wanted sugar in my life.. and with what kind of balance.

I enjoyed dabbling on sweets. Purposely taking a piece of chocolate at a wedding and a slice of cake on Friday night. I wouldn’t be happy with myself if I knew I couldn’t control myself in that fashion.
So how do you think
I did?

Honestly, some days were good and somedays weren’t. But, at the end of the day I felt I was cheating myself out of how I really wanted to feel. Its important to me, to eat whole clean foods that aren’t filled with ingredients that I have no idea what it means. In exactly a years time, I felt the difference of what it means to feel “clean” and what it means to feel “filled up with stuff.”

With this knowledge and experience, I can answer what my ideal is in relationship to Sugar and health and wellness.
It is OFF SUGAR for SURE.. 99.3/4 percent of the time. 1/4 percent is maybe for an occasion that I care to have something with sugar ingredients. The reason I am putting in that 1/4 percent, so when an occasion does arise that I want something indulgent it won’t feel like I am breaking a rule. An example would be to have a bite of my moms cheese cake. But, it will be on an extremely rare occasion because my mom hasn’t made cheese cake in over 10 years!

SUGAR DETOX has made me so happy, I want to continue for the rest of my life!

What is your ideal? Whatever it is you DESIRE you can ACHIEVE!

Drum Roll Please…..
This Thursday May 26 is….the Day we are weighing our self! E- mail me ur results! We can post how much we all lost collectively.

This Friday May 27 is….our Celebration Day.
I will send out details tomorrow.

Day 8 of Detoxing!

No Comments 16 April 2010

Hi Detoxers!

We made it thru a week Sugar Free!
Are you starting to feel lighter? Maybe have a little bit more energy?

Some notes: resist the urge to weigh yourself! Weighing yourself misses the point on where we are going with this. I know many of us want to shed pounds, but if we rely on the numbers of the scale to dictate to us how we should feel-we then will not be able to learn how to be in tune with how our bodies feel. Some days we wake up feeling awesome, energetic.  We may feel like we for sure dropped 2lbs. though the scale says we gained a half a pound. Our emotions then go up and down. There is enough stress in our lives that can send our emotions on a roller coaster. Its best not to self inflict it.
As a group, we weighed ourselves on Day 1 of Sugar Detox. We will weigh ourselves again on Day 30.
Let’s take a group promise to stay off the scale.
Say:” I will not weigh myself until Day 30 of the Challenge”

I hope you benefited from last nights e mail. Last April, I learned that my sugar addiction was a true addiction and not about a lack of will power. That’s what gave me the DESIRE to kick the habit.

Can you send me YOUR personal stories? We would all love to read some. When you send me an email please include if you allow me to reprint it and how I should sign it, your name or anonymous.

Below is a comment from our first brave sharer!

“As a person who suffers from migraine and tension headaches often, I’m happy to report that for 8 days I have not had any headaches! I’m actually shocked and amazed at myself, how I’m even doing it.
I am (hopefully was) totally addicted and fully dependent on sugar, sugar substitutes and anything sweet.
Nothing was ever too sweet for me. When my kids would put something down and not eat it bc they said it was too sweet for them, I picked it up and ate it. I’m laughing at my breakfast this morning (oatmeal with strawberries and blueberry with a spoon of agave).
In my usual oatmeal, I would put 2 sweet n lows, brown sugar and pancake syrup! It sounds gross, but it really wasn’t too sweet for me. I hope to continue to be strong, and not have these cravings and desires anymore.
Sari- i was asking you on the holidays, “so if you can’t eat this, and you can’t eat that then, what can you eat?.”
I’m eating, and I’m satisfied, and I’m full…I just hope I lose weight with this :)

P.S. I made a huge batch of rice krispie treats for shabbat. And I did not have even one crumb of it! Its one of my many sweet favorites…I’m very proud!” Olga Schweky

Thank you Olga!

How was your Day 6 and 7?

How was your Day 6 and 7?

No Comments 14 April 2010

I’m usually a day behind in sending my Newsletter. Today is actally Day 7!

Wow, already a week! if you had some bumps in road- don’t worry! Everyday is a learning experience. I try hard to send out the answers to your questions as fast as I can. Though I like to fully research the issues properly to give the most accurate answer.

To me, a sugar detox means no white flour, rice or pasta. No artificial sweatners. Extremely limited processed foods such as muffins, bread and pasta. Natural sweeteners used VERY sparingly.
The focus is on whole foods. Foods that are usually in the first isle and last isle at the supermarket.

You may be starting to feel your sugar withdrawals now.  This is when you will be needing your “Detox Buddies” the most!

Let’s talk about these withdrawals.  How and why do they happen? Knowledge is power. This knowledge will help you through your most difficult days.

Here’s the science of it-

(A response to another detoxer who noticed she was getting severe headaches…)

Sugar is highly addictive, just like any other addictive substance, like cocaine, marijuana, caffeine, and tobacco. Your brain is comprised of nerves (neurons) and at the end of those neurons are tiny bulbs called receptors. These receptors take in the chemicals that you intake and that the brain makes. The brain creates appropriate responses to those chemicals. For example, exercising produces endorphins in the brain. As a result, these chemicals cause the person to be more relaxed, happier, and with a lower risk of depression. Different chemicals  cause different changes in the mental and physical state. Here’s a sugar  example-

You eat sugar and the brain recognizes that. Its receptors wake up to receive the sugar. And if there is too much sugar (and too little receptors) the brain won’t let it go to waste! It actually creates new receptors to accommodate all the sugar. Tiny receptors spring up where needed to absorb all the sugar chemicals floating around the brain. So right now, our brains have been accommodating all the sugar that we intake by building all these new receptors.

Here is where headaches and other withdrawal symptoms (like tiredness, nausea, and irritability) come in–
Its a withdrawal symptom. Those receptors in ur brain are used to getting its daily does of sugar. So when you reduce your intake of sugar, after a certain amt of time, the receptors die out. And that’s the pain you are feeling. Its a withdrawal symptom, just like any other addictive substance has. You have built up tolerance to sugar and your brain has become so used to it. So you perceive pain when its not available for the receptors in your brain.
Now that you understand where its coming from- you might need to pop a few advils for a few days to numb the pain but remember—- you only have to go thru this once. Let those receptors die out and never give them enough sugar to rebuild!

If you are having headaches, and other withdrawal symptoms,
eat sugar stabilising foods (like almonds and oatmeal)

To my “Detox Buddies,”
Day 6 and 7 were super. I’m lucky that I’m not going thru these withdrawal symponts this year because I’ve been off high doses of sugar for a while. I did go thru them last April when I did the Detox.
My mind is relaxed, a natural way of eating is setting over me.

Passovers’ meals are behind us- now to get them off my behind! Body is feeling real good, especially since I instructed a Smartbell class. That always does the trick!

Till next time!

Day 5 of OUR Sugar Detox Diet

Day 5 of OUR Sugar Detox Diet

No Comments 13 April 2010

My story: (part 1)

I recently changed my title from “group fitness instructor” to “group movement enthusiast”

The reasoning is simple. Whenever someone would ask me “what do you teach?” I would fumble.” I teach, cardio..kick box….core…smartbells….power ball..redefine…bosu..aquatic..intervals….etc.. I would try feverishly to explain what all those terms actually ment-until I would get frustrated and just give up.
So, hence the name, “group movement enthusiasts”, I simply enjoy body movement of all forms- oh and I snuk in the word “lifestyle” because  I incorporate a bit of life and style into each and every one of my classes.

Why change the name NOW?
In order for you to understand, I need to reveal my story- or at least part of it.

I have been instructing fitness based classes since I was 22..I’m now 42- so its been a while, though to me it feels like yesterday!

Throughout that time period, up until last year-April 22, 2009, I felt like a fraud. To better understand what I mean, I’d like to relate it to a popular movie.
Do you know that girl who was on trial for allegedly killing her husband on Legally Blonde with Reese Witherspoon? The one who wouldn’t give up her alibi to the courts because she was a well known aerobic instructor and  hid the fact that she was doing liposuction on her thighs while her husband was being murdered.  She would have rather have gone to jail than to reveal her secret!
I didn’t kill my husband (g-d forbid) and didn’t lippo  my thighs! What I did may seem small, but it was huge to me.
I would eat a bag of chocolate kisses, or a box of Entenmans chocolate chip cookies. I would buy Carvel on Wednesdays because it was buy one get one free and eat both! I was so down on myself because I am so educated in health and nutrition and didn’t want to put all that garbage into my body, yet I was constantly hurting myself with sugar laden foods.
I always felt like, “if they only knew” my gig would be up!  I was hiding behind a mask. I felt as if my students were judging me. Even though they obviously were not. I was judging myself. I took myself to court everyday. And instead of being honest, I choose to go to jail. Jail of secrecy.
I was not overweight because all the rest of my meals were super healthy and my exercising habits were amazing.  I knew I could keep my alibi.

On april 22, 2009 my life literally changed.

All because of the fact that I faced my worst fears.  Comming clean in front of my students of whom I so badly wanted them to think I was perfect.
The day I had let go of the facade of being perfect was the day perfection started to come my way!
I introduced a “30 Day Sugar Detox” and confessed that I knew nothing about it.
I was  learning with my students and was scared beyond belief. 30 days? It seemed like an eternity.  Reflecting on that time, I could see that what I DID have was extremely powerful. Even more powerful then I was aware of.
My desire to rid sugar out of my life completely or until I knew I had it under control.(More about that next time)

I feel proud of my title. Group Movement Lifestyle Enthusiast. I know I deserve it from passed experiences. I am proud of my all my accomplishments. We all have “stuff” to work on. For some of us the DESIRE is stronger than others. But I know now,  that if you have the DESIRE you will ACHIEVE anything you want.
I know that you can do “30 Day Sugar Detox Challenge!”
We are already on day 5!! Yay! You should feel proud already!

Some tips from feedback that I am receiving.

If you slip up-don t worry! Just get back on track. Make sure you have foods readily available.
The first time I did the challenge I was defiantly having withdrawals. My body was used to the sugar rush. I kept handy any snack that would keep me off cookies- like bananas, nuts, eggs. I am now accustomed to eating without needing that energy surge that sugar gives. My mood and energy level is more stable.
I hope my experience inspires YOU to make change for the better.

“If want what you never had, you have to do what you never done”

To my “Detox Buddies:”
I was absolutely successful on Day 5.  Mind and body are feeling good.

If you need an e mail buddy, let me know!

Thank you Mary Setton for investigating our sushi dilemma. White rice sushi has sugar in it. Brown rice from the “sushi room” does NOT have sugar in its ingredients. Ask before you buy!

If anyone does any investigation of their own, e mail it to me and I will send it out.

To all those who did the “Sugar Detox” with me last year, can you pretty please with sugar on top- I mean Agave on top- send your story?
I will copy and paste it- everyone would for sure benefit.

May 7 free class experience- RSVP-ASAP,!

Until Next time!

> why you were or weren’t
> how your mind and body feels

C. Weigh yourself Thursday morning April 8, and resist the temptation to weigh yourself until May 8. While weight loss is a give in, I want to draw our focus to health and wellness and not to the numbers on the scale.
D. Incorporate clean healthy balanced meals by using all the food groups such as protein, carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, and “good for you” fats.
E. Join me and all of our “Sugar Detoxers” on Friday morning, May 7th from 10-12   for a morning to celebrate our accomplishments with a free inspiring class experience.  RSVP….ASAP! (regardless of your ability to finish the challenge, everyone will be a winner!) (Brooklyn, NY area)

B. I will share with you my own sugar expireinces –positve and negative!

My mission for this “30 Day Sugar Detox Challenge”

TO LIVE A LIFE YOU LOVE IN A BODY YOU LOVE, by a heightened awareness of the foods we put into our bodies. Realizing that “what you DESIRE you can a will ACHIEVE!”

What to do today:

A. Eliminate simple sugars completely from your diet. Read labels! Manufactures hide the name “sugar” to fool us. The most common are called fructose and corn syrup.
B. Do not restock your pantry with all the sugary foods that you simply cannot resist.
C. Load your refrigerator and pantry with all fresh unprocessed foods.
D. Visit the health food store and check out foods that you might enjoy such as cereals and oatmeal. Ask for the healthiest sweetener available such as Agave.
E. Determine what staple foods you will be eating and make sure it is sugar free.
F. Take the time to plan and prepare your meals- this is the most important step to success!

Dos and Dont’s:

-Artificial food sweeteners are a don’t! They are chemical based and is the exact opposite of the health and wellness benefits that we are striving for.
-Adding sugar to your morning coffee is acceptable only if absolutely needed. (I am so thankful that I’m not a coffee drinker!)
-Do enjoy every combination of whole foods.
-Don’t fret the small stuff- if you falter, just get back on track immediately.
-Do have sweet whole foods on hand (especially the first week) such as sweet potatoes and bananas, even dried fruit, so when a sugar temptation strikes, you will be well equipped.
-Do have regular meals everyday. (breakfast, lunch dinner and snacks.)  Having regular spaced meals is an insurance plan  that will maintain stable blood sugar levels.
– Do know that for most of us, this challenge will be at times very difficult. But, feel assured that it does get easier as every day goes by.

My Sample Menu:

8:00;-oatmeal with Greek nonfat plain yogurt and berries
(if I’m teaching a class and then working out I drink apple juice)
12:OO; post workout; a repeat of 8 am meal or hard boiled eggs and banana
3:00;walnuts, lentil soup  or sweet potato and hard boiled eggs
6:oo; salmon, brown rice, vegetables or salmon brown rice sushi and vegetables
8:oo ; almonds and fresh dates
Note that I did not include quantities. I believe that you should eat until you are satisfied. This is what I like to eat, there are hundreds of great combinations of meals that will suit your taste buds that are healthy and sugar free.

With lots of health and wellness! Xoxo Sari
