Take Off Your Shoes!

1 Comment 31 August 2010

Did you know that there are more than 58 muscels  in each human foot?
We love the way sneakers can keep our feet cushioned and well protected, but just  how much of all this is really good for us?

The simple act of walking uses more than 200 muscles; cushioning the feet in shoes all the time can throw you off balance, weaken the foot muscels, ligaments and tendons. Keeping shoes on our feet all the time, may inhibit sensory input from thousands of nerve endings in the soles of our feet, which can lead  to many problems in the foot, leg, and back..

I was introduced to barefoot training at a fitness conference in New York City over 10 years ago. I was excited to bring back this concept to  my group fitness class, but was uncomfortable to ask my  student to take off there sneakers. It was and is a common misconception by most, that the more cushioning and stabilization for your feet the better it was to protect your ankles, knees and back.
In actuality, its the exact opposite. An imagery I often tell my students is imagine your hand is fitted in a stiff glove, and all around the glove are lots of cushions, gels, and air pockets. With all the “stuff” around your hands it brings limited movement to your fingers. Your palms won’t be able to open and close. Your fingers won’t be able to spread open. In time, the muscles, ligaments and tendons will loose its strength. The wrist will weaken, and so will the elbow and shoulder. Everything is connected.

The same concept can be used for our feet. When you take off your shoes, the toes are able to spread out more easily, balance of the body improves, you can use your joints, ankles and hips more. A benefit of going barefoot is that it stimulates the circulation in your feet and can have a positive effect on all your organs.
Try doing a lunge with your supportative sneakers and see how that feels. Now, try the same lunge barefoot. Notice how much more control you need to contribute in order effectively do the same exact movement. Did you “thump” on the landing of your lunge knowing the supportative sneakers will protect you from the floor below?
Working out barefoot takes control, poise and mind fullness.

Try a few times a week to walk around the house barefoot. Engaging in muscles that are usually covered up.Its no wonder that babies kick off there booties- they know in order to learn to walk properly-they need there toes to touch the ground.

About 5 years ago, I had an amazing opportunity to conduct my summer classes in a karate studio in long branch new jersey.
Upon taking the space, the terms were that students must take off their sneakers in order to protect the delicate matting of the studios’ floor. I was hesitant to accept, but was way into the summer season and needed to act fast.
I agreed- we exercised 5 days a week with classes ranging from Cardio Fusion, Med ball and sculpting classes. It was a huge success. Women still come over to me with wonderful barefoot memories of that summer.
In the fall of the same year, I was determined to keep my sneakers off. I did and encouraged my students to do the same, until I stubbed and broke my toe on a dumbell while I was instructing. Since then, I will only teach barefoot training in an equipment free class to promote safety.
I was in search of a sneaker that would allow my foot the freedom yet protection from injuries.
After dozens of sneakers and years later I was finally introduced to “nike free” sneakers. These sneakers improved balance, agility, and foot strength. Thinner, lighter and more flexible designs mimic the foot’s natural form.
I encourage all my students to work out in them. If you do buy them, start off slowly-first once a week and little by little add more nike free time to a full week. At first you may feel cramping, that’s normal. In a few weeks time your feet will adjust to the new  demands.
More manufactures are following suit. As I give them a try I will send you my feedback.

Would you like to try an amazing barefoot cardio class?
Find out my schedule for WillPower&Grace. A class that infuse positive thoughts with practises borrowed from yoga, pilates.  Your feet, body and mind  will thank you!

Health Benefits of Juicing

Being a vegetarian for the last 23 years has forced me to look into

different diets and ways to eat right and stay healthy. Recently my appetite

has decreased, but as the day went along I was feeling tired and would have

cravings late at night. I was looking for an easy and effective way to do

something good for my body and a way to stop the night cravings. Juicing in

the morning and mid day proved to be a great help. Therefore I would like to

share some benefits of juicing with all of The Jewish Hostess readers.

The many health benefits of juicing far exceed those of eating solid fruits and

For one thing, the body can quickly absorb larger amounts of

nutrients from juices than from solid foods because the process of digestion

that is necessary when you eat whole foods is bypassed. Raw fruits and

vegetables contain many substances that enhance health, and juicing

benefits the body by providing the most concentrated and readily absorbed

source of these substances.

Another one of the major health benefits of juicing is that it is an easy way

to get beneficial enzymes, which are primarily found in raw foods, into

the body. Enzymes in fresh fruits and vegetables have the vital role of

converting food into body tissue and energy. Enzymes are also involved in

metabolism, so one of the more valuable health benefits of juicing is that it

can increase metabolic rate. Juicing also ensures that the body is getting

sufficient amounts of phytochemicals, substances in plants that are

considered among the most powerful ways to fight disease. While most

people do not eat enough raw fruits and vegetables to obtain the amount of

phytochemicals that would make a difference, it is relatively easy to drink

enough juice to obtain sufficient amounts of these powerful nutrients. In

addition, antioxidants and other immune enhancing properties are

concentrated in juices.

Juicing can therefore help to accelerate recovery from illness. In fact, juicing

with specific combinations of fruits or vegetables can target particular

conditions and improve or alleviate symptoms.

Among the most interesting health benefits of juicing are its anti-aging

benefits and its potential for alleviating symptoms of depression. The

effects of juicing on depression are accomplished by providing a

concentrated source of minerals like magnesium, potassium, iron, calcium,

and folic acid. Deficiencies of these nutrients are associated with symptoms

of depression.

Further, the concentration of antioxidants in juices combats the

damaging effects that free radicals have on skin and muscle. Juicing can

help keep skin free from wrinkles and muscles well toned. In addition,

increasing the intake of antioxidants by juicing can slow the onset of age-

related illnesses.

Juicing is relatively cost effective and convenient. By staying

healthy as a result of increasing your intake of fresh juices, you can also

reduce the need for expensive medications. Since there are no side effects

associated with juicing, you can drink as much juice as you are able to

tolerate, thereby maximizing health benefits. There are many tasty

combinations of fruits and vegetables, and the variety of juices that can be

prepared are likely to keep you in the habit of juicing once you realize the

many health benefits that doing so can provide.

In addition, fruit and vegetable juices are good sources of the traditional

nutrients. Citrus fruits (grapefruit, oranges, etc.) provide healthy portions of

vitamin C. Carrot juice contains large quantities of vitamin A, in the form of

beta carotene. A number of green juices are a good source of vitamin E.

Fruit juices are a good source of essential minerals like iron, copper,

potassium, sodium, iodine, and magnesium, which are bound by the plant in

a form that is most easily assimilated during digestion.

Plus, since juicing removes the indigestible fiber, these nutrients are

available to the body in much larger quantities than if the piece of fruit or

vegetable was eaten whole. For example, because many of the nutrients are

trapped in the fiber, when you eat a raw carrot, you are only able to

assimilate about 1% of the available beta carotene. When a carrot is juiced,

removing the fiber, nearly 100% of the beta carotene can be assimilated.

Finally, fruits and vegetables provide one more substance that is absolutely

essential for good health – water. More than 65% of most of the cells in the

human body are made of water, and in some tissues, for example the brain,

the cells can be made up of as much as 80% water. Water is absolutely

essential for good health, yet most people don’t consume enough water each

day. Plus, many of the fluids we do drink, coffee, tea, soft drinks, alcoholic

beverages and artificially flavored drinks each contain substances that

require extra water for your body to eliminate. Fruit and vegetable juices are

free of these unneeded substances and are full of pure, clean water.

Check out our huge selection of healthy juices and dont forget to mention The Jewish Hostess for 10% off of your next meal at Back to Nature!

Pure Inspiration by Sari Dana

No Comments 08 July 2010

This week, I was honored to be part of an inspiring day of health, fitness, and wellness. For this event, a group of bighearted women put aside their own needs and journeyed together with purpose, passion and strategy to create an unforgettable inspiring day. I was invited, along with other motivating professionals, to teach my willpower& grace® exercise experience. “Pure Inspiration” was a one-day event  to raise funds for Sharre Tefliah, a synagogue in Eatontown, New Jersey, yet it spurred ideas that will inspire a constant strive for health and wellness. I excitedly responded with a YES!  I was eager to apply my knowledge and love for fitness to a good cause.

nspiration is the theme in which I live my life.  I’m moved by fearless individuals who spend their time an energy creating  unique potentials for themselves. willPower & grace®, (yes, the w is lowercase), is a special barefoot cardio workout that infuses a positive philosophy through elegant movements and physical strength. Positive thinking during the intense workout will encourage you to continuously strengthen your body, mind, and soul and live Ihappily in a body you love.

Minutes before the class began, I learned that the congregants of this synagogue have spent 18 of its 20 years in existence servicing either in a trailer or in a home. 2 years ago, a structure was built, however, the interior was lacking a few important sections. I began to reflect on the women that created this amazing day and felt the desire to help, just like them.

At that moment, I was deeply inspired to do something awesome.  Sometimes all we need to navigate the pathway to greatness is to be inspired by someone else.  I led my class, full of energy, with inspirational thoughts, aware that I am part of a fantastic cause.   If we keep our eyes open and our hearts receptive, we can be a part of the great inspiring things happening all over our communities. We can then generate others on the path to greatness.

Think: Who are you inspiring? What can you share? Who can you share it with? We may not realize it, but people, especially our families, are perceptive to all that we do!  Imagine how the world would be if we created a circle of inspiration.  Be an exciting you! Honing in on your desires will allow you to pass on pure inspiration to those all around you. Pass it on!

Wheatgrass- “The Next Big Thing”

Wheatgrass- “The Next Big Thing”

3 Comments 27 June 2010

According to Albert Bijou, the  owner and health guru of Back to Nature, wheatgrass juice is “the next big thing”.  It can be mixed with any fruit smoothie or you can drink it straight up. Albert is offering all Jewish Hostess readers $1. off of  any wheatgrass shot!

Read on….

It helps increase a person’s stamina, build healthy blood, cleanse the whole system, aid digestion, make bowel movements regular, reduce cravings for addictive substances, improve fertility, inhibit the growth of disease causing bacteria and the activity of cancer-causing chemicals as well as ease practically every physical and mental ailment you would expect to encounter among people who are not properly nourished.

Wheatgrass juice has as much vitamin C as citrus fruits and is as high in vitamin A as dark green lettuce or carrots. It’s an excellent source of B-vitamins, including laetrile, and contains vitamin E and K as well. Wheatgrass juice contains all the minerals in healthy soil, over 100, including calcium, iron, sodium, potassium, magnesium, and a variety of trace minerals such as selenium and zinc. It also contains all eight essential amino acids, also known as the building blocks of protein. Young wheatgrass contains more enzymes than at any other stage of growth. It has simple sugar, which accounts for its sweet taste. But wait; as if all this wasn’t enough, the solid portion of the wheatgrass juice is 70% chlorophyll – condensed sun energy and the world’s most effective body protector and healer.

Day 27 of Our Sugar Detox!

Day 27 of Our Sugar Detox!

1 Comment 07 May 2010

27 days of  eating with awareness is amazing!
Now what??

My story part 2:

I went on sugar detox last April on till September. During that time, I truly felt absolutely amazing. My mind was clearer. My eyes seemed wide opened all the time. I always thought that I needed a sugar snack for a “pick me up” but it was the exact opposite. Its was the lack of sugar that kept me  feeling refreshed, never going into that “slump”- (for me it was at 5:00 pm- when I would search for anything to get me thru the evening.)
Even though detoxing from sugar gave me an incredible boost of everything good, I wanted to know, for myself, that I can eat a portion of desert or sweets and not over do it. I intentionally re introduced sugar back into my body! I always envied people who took a bite of cake and pushed the rest aside, not wanting anymore. Or the person who can have a few M+M’s and feel satisfied. I wanted to be that person. So..I experimented from September until April in that manner. Testing the waters so to speak on where I wanted sugar in my life.. and with what kind of balance.

I enjoyed dabbling on sweets. Purposely taking a piece of chocolate at a wedding and a slice of cake on Friday night. I wouldn’t be happy with myself if I knew I couldn’t control myself in that fashion.
So how do you think
I did?

Honestly, some days were good and somedays weren’t. But, at the end of the day I felt I was cheating myself out of how I really wanted to feel. Its important to me, to eat whole clean foods that aren’t filled with ingredients that I have no idea what it means. In exactly a years time, I felt the difference of what it means to feel “clean” and what it means to feel “filled up with stuff.”

With this knowledge and experience, I can answer what my ideal is in relationship to Sugar and health and wellness.
It is OFF SUGAR for SURE.. 99.3/4 percent of the time. 1/4 percent is maybe for an occasion that I care to have something with sugar ingredients. The reason I am putting in that 1/4 percent, so when an occasion does arise that I want something indulgent it won’t feel like I am breaking a rule. An example would be to have a bite of my moms cheese cake. But, it will be on an extremely rare occasion because my mom hasn’t made cheese cake in over 10 years!

SUGAR DETOX has made me so happy, I want to continue for the rest of my life!

What is your ideal? Whatever it is you DESIRE you can ACHIEVE!

Drum Roll Please…..
This Thursday May 26 is….the Day we are weighing our self! E- mail me ur results! We can post how much we all lost collectively.

This Friday May 27 is….our Celebration Day.

Day 22!

2 Comments 07 May 2010

Did you know that it takes 21 days to form a habit?  Habits are created by repetition. The best way old habits may be broken is to form new habits, to counteract and replace the undesirable ones. Form new mental habits paths over which to travel, and soon the old ones will become less distinct.

So, congratulations! You went thru the hardest part of “sugar Detox”— the first 21 days. The next week is going to be so easy.

Most of us became accustomed with what to eat and not eat.  Some became frustrated because I didn’t give out a “diet plan.” But if I did that, then you will always look for me for support. The people who give out diet plans are usually the ones who want to make money.  I would rather give you tools for life and learn what makes your body feel as good as can be. Granted, it may take a few trials and errors, but at the end of the day you will have a way to eat for the rest of your life.

I keep on repeating myself, but I am so ecstatic about what we are doing.  I am so energized by everyones excitement. I will give you a few examples; I was running down Ocean Parkway and I passed a good friend of mine, Flo Tebele on the other side. She hollers out from across the street, “I’m on the detox!!”  I big smile spreads across my face.  Another friend confides in me that she bought whole wheat food for the first time in her life. I instantly glowed.

And another close friend, Celie Haddad whispers in my ear that she is on the “Sugar Detox since she became influenced in August! That’s almost 10 months! Celie is going to share her story with us on May 7th, our celebration day.

Speaking of celebrations, my birthday is on Saturday May 1. I so want to plan a birthday party for myself, and I would want nothing more than to share it with you! (I need to figure out a way to do that!)  I guess, Eddie will just have to do! (Though he’s not sugar detoxer) and no birthday cake for me! Don’t feel bad, I am ecstatic to say no!

Detox day 19!

No Comments 07 May 2010

On my first e-mail to you I posed a question, “Can you go a day, a week, or how about a month with no sugar?” Well, most of us completed a day, lots completed a week, and can you believe it…. So many are approaching 1 month goal mark!

Today, on day 19, we can look back and say, WOW! We can start feeling that proud feeling of accomplishment that we get when we do something so terrific for ourselves.

Though, I believe the greatest accomplishment is believing in yourself and saying “I think I can do this!”

Below is a famous poem by Walter D. Wintle that has helped, and continues to help me, to achieve higher in my goals.

If you think you are beaten, you are,

If you think you dare not, you don’t;

If you like to win, but you think you can’t,

It is almost certain you wont.

If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost,

For out in the world we find,

Success begins with a fellow’s will-

It’s all in a state of mind.

If you think you are outclassed, you are,

You’ve got to think high to rise;

You’ve got to be sure of yourself before

You can ever win a prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go

To the stronger or faster man,

But soon or late, the man who wins

Is the man who thinks he can.

Detox day 11 and 12!

Detox day 11 and 12!

No Comments 07 May 2010

Tonight I felt the support of my “email. buddies” which is you!
My son Harry brought home my favorite- you know it… Carvel ice cream-perfectly melted, vanilla mixed with chocolate. Normally I wouldn’t waver, but tonight, Harry was on his way leaving to Israel for the next few months.  I was happy that he was going, to learn in a Yeshivah, but of course sad. Even though my house thank G-d, is super busy with a teenagers, toddlers and grand kids- as all moms know, each child adds something special.  With Harry about to leave for his flight- I was feeling the need for comfort food, aka-Cookies! Chocolate!
Of course I passed it up. Not because I would gain weight, or turn back into a sugar addict if I indulged a little. But, because MY WORD is POWERFUL. What I say means something. The way we train our bodies to be strong by doing, let’s say, push-ups or squats, we can also train our brain to be strong as well.
Understanding that I have the power of my thoughts was the most important thing I learned last year on my sugar challenge. I know I will use that knowledge for the rest of my life as I encounter different challenges, self-inflicted or not.
For example, the fitness enthusiasts who are receiving this e-mail can testify that at some point in their life they decided to reap the benefits of exercise for their bodies. These women actually trained their brain to know, every morning “I exercise, no matter what.” One of the more powerful tools that we are all experiencing together is the power of OUR WORD. We are declaring as a group that we are not going to eat sugar for 30 days-no matter what. I of course passed up on the urge for the sweets! We gave our word, we are training our brains and thought process. We are feeling powerful because we are allowing ourselves to have the power of choice!

What we DESIRE we can ACHIEVE thru the POWER of our WORD.
Thank you “Detox Buddies” for being there when I needed you most!

On another note; one that is on a grand scale for me; is what this newsletter is doing for me.

As you know, I have been teaching fitness-based classes for 20 years. I worked hard each and every day. I always felt as if I was only as good as my “last class.”  It was an awesome ride, though thoroughly exhausting! Via your responses I feel as if I could do anything. My love for empowering women with health and fitness is endless, but it’s truly because of you, that I realize that potential.

Below is a response that simply reminds me that its all worth it!

“I have to tell you that thanks to you and your motivation that I’m on this sugar free diet. As you already have been hearing from others, it has led me to eat healthy through all my meals as well. I haven’t been committed to such a healthy lifestyle since I was a teenager (before all the kids started coming along). Now at 40 you realize that pounds don’t shed so easily, and you fear that your at risk of inheriting your parents health diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressures…etc. The only way to fight them is through a healthy lifestyle. So hats off to you for all the encouragement because looking at my parents health history I’ll need all the help I can get.”

More Tips:

“I found at Moishes a great no sugar and low fat and organic and delicious cracker flats by Aunt Gussies. It comes with raisins and cinnamon that can satisfy the craving for a cookie. It comes in many other smart choices too.” – Thank you Maggie Bawabe for a great snack tip! (and thanks for all your nice messages!)

Here is another great idea from Stacie Dana;

“Buy a rice cooker! While you are getting dressed after exercise, your brown rice is being cooked!”

Send me YOUR great ideas!

What is happening on Friday May 7th?

A special class experience that I am planning just for YOU!

It’s my way of saying Thank YOU for reading my newsletters.

Thank you for trusting me.

Thank you for spreading more health and wellness to the universe

Who should attend?

All who is interested in the betterment of their minds body and soul

Do I have to be on the Detox to attend?

If you were successful or not -it doesn’t matter- just by reading the e-mails to open your mind to new ideas is absolutely successful!

How much is it?

Absolutely free!

What do I need to do?

Just press reply and RSVP!

What should I come with?

A water bottle and an opened mind with focus on YOU!

“To my “Detox Buddies”

I was successful on Day 11 and 12- though I almost wasn’t. My mind feels good, actually very good. I feel clearer and not as bogged down.

As for my body, I don’t feel like that I even lost a pound, (I know its not the focus, but it would be nice to have loose skinny jeans!) but in Yoga today I felt extra flexible- I totally put the “Sugar Detox” accountable!

Till Tomorrow! P.S.- send me tips that I can share with others! LUV and HUGs, Sari

Love Your Little Ones- Be BPA-Free

Love Your Little Ones- Be BPA-Free

1 Comment 20 April 2010

As if we need more Jewish guilt

Who would ever think that  popular brand baby bottles, pacifiers, and toys could possibly be dangerous to our kids health?

This week, Earth Day prompts us all to be aware of the chemicals in the environment and in our homes.

Pregnancy and early childhood are critical times in babies’ lives because they are growing and developing so rapidly. During this time they are vulnerable to elements in their environment, and we as  parents should protect them as much as possible from exposure to potentially harmful substances.

PolyVinyl Chloride (PVC) is a hard plastic that requires harsh chemical softeners, such as phthalates, to make it appropriate for use in soft plastic baby toys such as squirty toys.

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is used in hard, clear plastics sometimes used in baby toys to prevent breakage.

In 2003 it was shown that products  manufactured with PVC  and BPA were shown to disrupt reproductive functions and cause other developmental problems.

Make sure your baby products are also Nitrosamine free: Nitrosamines are found in latex products such as some infant teethers. They have been shown to cause cancer in many animals.   Make sure  all your teethers and soothers are nitrosamine free.

Check out the items below. Do your research, and be informed.

How To Relax While You Are Cooking

Shabbat Shalom
Your Peace of the Week
by: Marissa Anteby

I can’t take all the credit for this week’s topic. The  inspiration for this article, came to me when I was reading the comments posted last week. In it, I described an at home Tension Releasing Massage you can do for yourself. Maggie, wrote in: “Sounds good, have to try this. Today the aroma of fresh baked challah is (finally) my relaxation.”

She touched on something so vital; the act of cooking, lends itself perfectly to taking a moment to inhale slowly and access a place of calm within yourself. To expand upon that theme; really any activity can be utilized as an opportunity to be mindful. Focusing on the task at hand, while simultaneously recognizing what’s going on in your inner world, will cultivate a sense of ease. Checking in with your thoughts and your breathing, can help alleviate stress, both mental and physical. For more information about Mindfulness Training, you can check out a 7-day course I participated in at The Miraval Spa.

Maggie’s comment got me thinking; I wonder what other things Jewish women do to make their cooking time enjoyable. So, I posed the question to my Indoor Cycling students, and here’s their list of suggestions:

• “Make a shopping list, and go to the supermarket early in the day, so you’ll have all the ingredients you need.” – A. Dweck

• De-clutter your work space before you start to cook. For tips on how to de-clutter click here: http://embodyinc.blogspot.com/2010/04/tips-for-de-cluttering-and-clearing.html

• “Playing music helps me relax, and makes me happy to be in the kitchen, even if it is for hours! The music makes the time go by faster.” – Raquel Mishaan

• “When I’m cooking, I like to clean up as I go along, so the pots don’t pile up. I can stay in the kitchen for as long as needed, because I’m working in a clear environment.” – Violet Cohen

• “Don’t rush cooking your food, you’ll taste the love in it afterward.” – Rachelle Esses
Wow, isn’t that beautiful. Rachelle told me her Mom says that. It’s such a lovely motto to live by. It’s good to remind yourself, that the energy you put in to making your family’s meals is transmitted and truly appreciated.

When your hard work in the kitchen is complete (I know your thinking, “That’s never.”) Do something special for yourself. Sit down and read a book (now you’re really laughing.) Ok, I’ll re-phrase, sit down and read a sentence in a book, before you get interrupted, or go for a walk, meet with a friend, etc.

Sarah Haddad Cheney says, “Women deserve time for themselves. Tell everyone to come to the Spa Day this Wednesday April 21, at the new SCC Spa. There will be all kinds of treatments; SkinDeep skin care products and consultations, chemical peels, hair styling by Momotaro NYC, Thai Yoga Massage, and more.” http://scclive.org/pages/detail/47/-Health-ClubSpa

As always, scroll all the way down to post your comments. I really enjoy reading them, and 1 lucky winner will be chosen from people who comment. The prize is a FREE Thai Yoga Massage from www.embodyinc.com

Shabbat Shalom,

Marissa Anteby is a wife, and a mother of 4 children. Her company  www.embodyinc.com hosts holistic exercise classes in Cycling, Pilates, and Yoga, in cities throughout New York and New Jersey. Day 5 of OUR Sugar Detox Diet

My story: (part 1)

I recently changed my title from “group fitness instructor” to “group movement enthusiast”

The reasoning is simple. Whenever someone would ask me “what do you teach?” I would fumble.” I teach, cardio..kick box….core…smartbells….power ball..redefine…bosu..aquatic..intervals….etc.. I would try feverishly to explain what all those terms actually ment-until I would get frustrated and just give up.
So, hence the name, “group movement enthusiasts”, I simply enjoy body movement of all forms- oh and I snuk in the word “lifestyle” because  I incorporate a bit of life and style into each and every one of my classes.

Why change the name NOW?
In order for you to understand, I need to reveal my story- or at least part of it.

I have been instructing fitness based classes since I was 22..I’m now 42- so its been a while, though to me it feels like yesterday!

Throughout that time period, up until last year-April 22, 2009, I felt like a fraud. To better understand what I mean, I’d like to relate it to a popular movie.
Do you know that girl who was on trial for allegedly killing her husband on Legally Blonde with Reese Witherspoon? The one who wouldn’t give up her alibi to the courts because she was a well known aerobic instructor and  hid the fact that she was doing liposuction on her thighs while her husband was being murdered.  She would have rather have gone to jail than to reveal her secret!
I didn’t kill my husband (g-d forbid) and didn’t lippo  my thighs! What I did may seem small, but it was huge to me.
I would eat a bag of chocolate kisses, or a box of Entenmans chocolate chip cookies. I would buy Carvel on Wednesdays because it was buy one get one free and eat both! I was so down on myself because I am so educated in health and nutrition and didn’t want to put all that garbage into my body, yet I was constantly hurting myself with sugar laden foods.
I always felt like, “if they only knew” my gig would be up!  I was hiding behind a mask. I felt as if my students were judging me. Even though they obviously were not. I was judging myself. I took myself to court everyday. And instead of being honest, I choose to go to jail. Jail of secrecy.
I was not overweight because all the rest of my meals were super healthy and my exercising habits were amazing.  I knew I could keep my alibi.

On april 22, 2009 my life literally changed.

All because of the fact that I faced my worst fears.  Comming clean in front of my students of whom I so badly wanted them to think I was perfect.
The day I had let go of the facade of being perfect was the day perfection started to come my way!
I introduced a “30 Day Sugar Detox” and confessed that I knew nothing about it.
I was  learning with my students and was scared beyond belief. 30 days? It seemed like an eternity.  Reflecting on that time, I could see that what I DID have was extremely powerful. Even more powerful then I was aware of.
My desire to rid sugar out of my life completely or until I knew I had it under control.(More about that next time)

I feel proud of my title. Group Movement Lifestyle Enthusiast. I know I deserve it from passed experiences. I am proud of my all my accomplishments. We all have “stuff” to work on. For some of us the DESIRE is stronger than others. But I know now,  that if you have the DESIRE you will ACHIEVE anything you want.
I know that you can do “30 Day Sugar Detox Challenge!”
We are already on day 5!! Yay! You should feel proud already!

Some tips from feedback that I am receiving.

If you slip up-don t worry! Just get back on track. Make sure you have foods readily available.
The first time I did the challenge I was defiantly having withdrawals. My body was used to the sugar rush. I kept handy any snack that would keep me off cookies- like bananas, nuts, eggs. I am now accustomed to eating without needing that energy surge that sugar gives. My mood and energy level is more stable.
I hope my experience inspires YOU to make change for the better.

“If want what you never had, you have to do what you never done”

To my “Detox Buddies:”
I was absolutely successful on Day 5.  Mind and body are feeling good.

If you need an e mail buddy, let me know!

Thank you Mary Setton for investigating our sushi dilemma. White rice sushi has sugar in it. Brown rice from the “sushi room” does NOT have sugar in its ingredients. Ask before you buy!

If anyone does any investigation of their own, e mail it to me and I will send it out.

To all those who did the “Sugar Detox” with me last year, can you pretty please with sugar on top- I mean Agave on top- send your story?
I will copy and paste it- everyone would for sure benefit.

May 7 free class experience- RSVP-ASAP,!

Until Next time!

DAY 4 ON OUR “30 Day Sugar Detox Challenge!”

No Comments 12 April 2010

How are YOU doing so far?
Eliminating sugar from our diet can be very rewarding. I find that one of the greatest benefits is that you wind up choosing healthier food choices because your not filling up on foods that have simple sugars in its ingredients, also known as “empty calories.”

I must confess that I am finding this experience to be an extremely  satisfying one.  The emails and comments that I  receive  motivate me to keep on writting! Women are  sharing  with me either their challenges or questions about details in their diet which clue me in to the fact that everyone  wants to adhere to the strictest letter of our law!

Some expressed that even though they are not joining in the challenge, they are reading the e-mails and are motivated to possibly try it at another time of their life.

Others  revealed that their kids are getting involved and trying to eliminate sugar from their diets. While other woman feel “like fabulous roll models to their children and husbands by taking good heath care of themselves.”

Where ever YOU are in our Detox Challenge its ALL GOOD!

Thank you for reading, participating and sharing.

I love the questions-though please be patient with the answers as I’m getting lots of them!

Q: Can we eat dairy products such as low fat mozzarella cheese or cottage cheese.

A. Yes! Low fat or fat free dairy products are fine.  We are aiming for a healthy diet that promotes all food groups.

A recent study showed that the more servings of dairy foods that adults consumed, the greater the percentage of their total calories that came from saturated fat (definitely not a good thing).

But the other side to the story is that their intake of many key nutrients — like protein, calcium, magnesium , folate, B1, B2, B6, B12, and vitamins  A, D, and E — also increased along with the number of dairy servings.

So how do you get all those great nutrients from dairy without the drawbacks?

Low-fat dairy is the answer! As you decrease the fat in dairy products, you cut calories, saturated fat, and cholesterol , while protein, calcium, and most other vitamins and minerals remain high.

Low-fat milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, and reduced-fat cheese pack a protein and calcium punch in every serving. Just a cup of lite nonfat yogurt, for example, gives you a third of your daily recommended calcium intake, along with 17% of your estimated daily protein intake.

I realise that many people don’t eat dairy. To those I simply recommend obtaining those same nutritious vitamins from other sources. Such as; dark leafy greens for calcium, beans for protein and spinach for folate.

To my “Sugar Detox Buddies”

 – I was successful on day 2, 3 and 4. (Friday, Saturday and Sunday!) My mind feels strong and determined. My body is starting to feel lighter. I am so ready for the days ahead!

Friday May 7 10-12
An event you won’t want to miss! Be a  part of the experience. RSVP -ASAP

Detox Your Home – Today!

No Comments 11 April 2010

Your home should be the cleanest place in the whole world… and you may think it is, but by using cleaning products filled with hazardous chemicals, you are actually doing more harm than good!!! You can read the alarming facts HERE. The good news is that keeping your home clean and healthful (to you and the planet) is not as hard as it seems.  And contrary to popular belief, these green cleaners work just as well as the chemical ones. I know because I use them!

So I’ve gathered some easy tips from Shaklee’s website. They make my favorite products for keeping my house squeaky clean.

  1. Get the dirt.
Educate yourself about what you bring into your home at www.householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov
  2. Have a clean-for-all.
Put on the gloves and get rid of the nasty stuff in your home. Responsibly, of course. Your local waste collection service has guidelines for proper household hazardous waste disposal, as well as collection sites for things like paint, batteries, and cleaners. Whatever you do, please don’t toss this stuff in the garbage.
  3. Welcome healthy into your home.
Commit to carefully considering everything that crosses your doorstep. Here are some safe, healthy things to have in your home:

    • Fresh air. Open your windows to reduce indoor air pollution.
    • Essential oils. Use these instead of air fresheners.
    • Plants. Besides being nice to look at, they can absorb harmful gases and help clean the air.
    • Organic cotton bedding. Avoid standard bedding treated with chemicals.
    • Floors made of recycled and renewable resources.
    • Healthy paint. That new paint smell can be as nasty as it smells. Choose low VOC paint instead.
    • Cleaners that are truly cleaner. Look for these clean credentials on Get Clean products: non-toxic, natural,
      biodegradable, concentrated, and hypoallergenic.
  4. Clean up our collective home.
Make the earth healthier for all of us who call it home by using these things in yours:

    • Compact fluorescent lighting. They last a whole lot longer.
    • Energy Star-rated appliances. Save money and energy.
    • A low-flush toilet. Replace the largest user of water in your house. Ultra low flushers cut water use by one-fifth.
    • Low-flow showerheads. Same pressure. Less water.
    • Your flicker finger. Turn off lights and appliances when you’re not using them.
    • Gray water system. Install one to recycle used household water for your lawn.
    • Tankless water heater. Save money, energy, and space in the broom closet. Use it to store your new

My mission for this “30 Day Sugar Detox Challenge”

TO LIVE A LIFE YOU LOVE IN A BODY YOU LOVE, by a heightened awareness of the foods we put into our bodies. Realizing that “what you DESIRE you can a will ACHIEVE!”

What to do today:

A. Eliminate simple sugars completely from your diet. Read labels! Manufactures hide the name “sugar” to fool us. The most common are called fructose and corn syrup.
B. Do not restock your pantry with all the sugary foods that you simply cannot resist.
C. Load your refrigerator and pantry with all fresh unprocessed foods.
D. Visit the health food store and check out foods that you might enjoy such as cereals and oatmeal. Ask for the healthiest sweetener available such as Agave.
E. Determine what staple foods you will be eating and make sure it is sugar free.
F. Take the time to plan and prepare your meals- this is the most important step to success!

Dos and Dont’s:

-Artificial food sweeteners are a don’t! They are chemical based and is the exact opposite of the health and wellness benefits that we are striving for.
-Adding sugar to your morning coffee is acceptable only if absolutely needed. (I am so thankful that I’m not a coffee drinker!)
-Do enjoy every combination of whole foods.
-Don’t fret the small stuff- if you falter, just get back on track immediately.
-Do have sweet whole foods on hand (especially the first week) such as sweet potatoes and bananas, even dried fruit, so when a sugar temptation strikes, you will be well equipped.
-Do have regular meals everyday. (breakfast, lunch dinner and snacks.)  Having regular spaced meals is an insurance plan  that will maintain stable blood sugar levels.
– Do know that for most of us, this challenge will be at times very difficult. But, feel assured that it does get easier as every day goes by.

My Sample Menu:

8:00;-oatmeal with Greek nonfat plain yogurt and berries
(if I’m teaching a class and then working out I drink apple juice)
12:OO; post workout; a repeat of 8 am meal or hard boiled eggs and banana
3:00;walnuts, lentil soup  or sweet potato and hard boiled eggs
6:oo; salmon, brown rice, vegetables or salmon brown rice sushi and vegetables
8:oo ; almonds and fresh dates
Note that I did not include quantities. I believe that you should eat until you are satisfied. This is what I like to eat, there are hundreds of great combinations of meals that will suit your taste buds that are healthy and sugar free.

With lots of health and wellness! Xoxo Sari

Spring Detox Juice Recipes

Apple juice-ginger drink and Lavander lemonade...

After all of that charoset and matzoh, its time to give our bodies a fresh start. Here are some  juicy recipes to help  jump start your spring!

the following excerpt is adapted from here.

“Imagine us all being kids again and we have spent the day out in a big huge pile of beautiful dirt, digging holes, making castles, playing with toys, living large. We come back inside and it’s time to clean up. How? Every which way; we clean our hair, our nails, our skin, our feet, our backs, our ears… wherever the dirt and gunk of the day got into. Same goes for cleansing our insides, and juicing cleanses the cells faster than any other food that I’ve found. Cleansing is not “new, and improved.”

We are all cleansing right now, and have been since the moment of conception. Every cell is constantly peeing and pooping. Every time we breathe out, we’ve cleansed our body of the metabolic waste known as carbon dioxide. Every time we have a bowel movement, our body is eliminating old cellular material (interesting: up to 40% of every bowel movement is dead cells). Cleansing occurs because our body’s cells are constantly dying and being replaced with new cells. Our spleen and liver and stomach cells do it, our intestinal walls do it, even our bones and muscle cells do this regeneration circle of life. All vegetable juicing does is improve this spring-cleaning regeneration process.

1. There is hardly any digestive work needed to process raw, enzyme  active liquid. Vegetable juice gets into the system quickly.

2. Squeezed vegetable juice is very nutrient-dense. This concentration acts to supercharge the system in the same way that herbal tinctures work. One of the words we are going to hear more about over the next few years is “phytonutrients,” or plant chemicals. They are proving-as those who have switched to whole foods always have known-to be the key behind keeping our bodies free of cancer, digestive problems, and other degenerative illnesses.

3. The most important, and most overlooked, reason: juicing cleans the liver. I believe that the next big advance in understanding health will be in acknowledging the importance of self-detoxifying and de-sludging our liver. Sure, if you look into any human biology book, it already tells us that there are now over 700 known functions of the liver. But what we don’t realize is how that functionality is dependent on how unclogged it is.”

Cocomint Foot Balm & Peppermint Foot Scrub

Shabbat Shalom;

Your Peace of the Week

by: Marissa Anteby

Ahhh, the count down is on. Only a little while till Shabbat. Why not pamper yourself with a body scrub? Here’s an easy body scrub that you can make right now. Here’s what you’ll need:

1.  1 cup of salt; it can be sea, Epsom or plain old table salt.

2.  1 cup of oil; baby, coconut, sweet almond, or even vegetable oil.

3.  6 drops of eucalyptus essential oil.

4.  4 drops peppermint essential oil.

(Don’t worry, you can do it without the essential oils this time. But go to a health food store during the week and buy some, so you can use them next time.)

• Mix the oil in to the salt. Then add the drops of essential oil.

  • Pour a spoonful of the scrub mixture on to a loofah or a washcloth. It’s ok if the salt has settled to the bottom, get that part on your spoon.
  • Apply the concoction to your skin, liberally. Don’t  scour too abrasively; salt can be harsh on delicate skin. Avoid getting the scrub on your face and neck. But feel free to spend extra time on your elbows, knees, and bottoms of feet.
  • Now spoon on only the oil to your loofah or washcloth. Cover all the spots you got with the salt. Again, you could spend more time on your elbows, knees, and bottoms of feet.
  • Rinse thoroughly in the shower or bath.

You should feel invigorated. The salt exfoliates your skin and the oil softens and moisturizes it. Enjoy this while you can, because your few moments of that “Calgon take me away,”  feeling are almost over… it’ll be time to get dressed and back to reality!

Shabbat Shalom,
