A Persian Passover Seder at The Huntley Hotel in Santa Monica

No Comments 04 March 2012

Thank you  Djamilla Cochran of http://www.theroseweddings.com for sharing this elegant Persian seder from 2012 with Jewish Hostesses from so many different backgrounds. I am continually fascinated by the different Jewish cultures that span the globe. We all share the same Torah, yet throughout thousands of years of peace and persecution, history has allowed us all to survive, and express our individuality as separate Jewish communities. Beautiful! I have enjoyed posting this unique seder, as I hope you will all enjoy reading. Marlene

This beautiful Passover Seder was styled by Marjaneh from Candybar Couture with lots of help from her mother Guity. Although, Passover is a Jewish Holiday celebrated for thousands of years, this family who is originally from Iran, took a very modern approach to designing the party. The party was held at the Huntley Hotel in Santa Monica. The second floor patio that was covered halfway by a beautiful white tent that was the ideal location to seat more than 70 guests. It is very common for Iranians living in Los Angeles to have a large number of guests at the Seder. They invite friends and lots of extended family. A microphone had to be used for all of the guests to hear the prayers!

The food that is used for the prayers, along with flowers were used as the centerpiece.

They included lettuce, bitter herbs, Matzos, vinegar and Halegh which is the Iranian version of Charoset. The highlight of the nigh is generally Dayenu where it is customary for Iranian Jews to playfully hit each other with the raw scallions. This tradition symbolizes the whips of the slaves in Egypt.”

1. Lily Pads and Frogs Passover Table Decor By Kineret Spector (check out more of  Kineret’s creative tables HERE and HERE!)

“This year we went for a fresh frog-inspired spring theme for our Passover table. Paper lotus flowers on lilly pads are fun place cards. Appetizer plates off center add to the floating lilly pad feel. Round woven place mats down the center of the table make a fun lilly pad kind of runner, with water lilly candle holders and candles adding a glowy ambiance. Finally, wire garden frogs add a little whimsy.
Thanks, Marlene!”

2. A Country Seder Table by Lisa Ades-

“My country seder in Massachusets – nothin’ fancy since the green outside from our Japanese garden is all the decoration we need…”

“I wish I had chairs that match but at least we have glasses that match – they were Grandma Ades’s.”

“This is my “centerpiece” – my mom and I went to the nursery down the street where they have the most beautiful pansies…”

“We planted them in this pot that has real moss growing on it. What could be prettier than that?”

“Did you notice my “diamond” napkin fold? I found it on http://www.napkinfoldingguide.com/! Ethan made that kippah on the right when he was little – i love the pom pom on it and that all the letters fell off except for HA! Enjoy! Lisa”

“Hi Marlene!
Our gourmet popcorn business closed for pesach-so we finally had some free time on our hands! Like always-we suprise our mother with a beautiful table every holiday. This years inspiration was “hag ha’aviv-holiday of the spring. ” A trip to the flower market, & a local nursery-& we were done! We rented a camel table cloth, yellow napkins,& bamboo chairs from Brooklyn Party Rental -Sonny Halawani- Our centerpieces were grass we bought already in those rustic wood crates, glass jars filled with moss, real birch wood, birds, lemons & limes.. For place cards we potted moss in terra cotta pots, & used birch wood scraps (we got it free!) that we ripped in small pieces for the names. Next to that, we placed our home-made leather bound Hagadahs! Our favorite part of the whole table – everyones little shelf with all the symbolic foods. We found these lucite “cabinet organizers” for cents-& we turned them into individual ke’aras! It was soo easy & so much fun! Enjoy!!”

Get Green for a Fresh and Sophisticated Spring Passover Seder!

1 Comment 19 January 2012

Go Green for Passovcer Tabletop!
This year, allow your Passover seder dinner table to usher in a fresh, clean, updated elegant look.
Imbue your table top with sophisticated greens and a modern relaxed touch. Splash on accessories from Oscar De La Renta’s fabulous brand  new table top line. These salt and pepper and bottle stopper fish designs will just bring images of the Red Sea right onto your seder table!
(LOVE them for summer entertaining too!)
I would use several of  the stunning Egyptian inspired  mini green foil square trays to hold marror (bitter herb- we use romaine lettuce), haroset, boiled eggs, the vegetable
(we use endive), . Invert a bowl in the center of  a lucite tray and place a square tray atop for the center shank bone or zeroah to be raised higher than the other seder plate items. Place on a clear lucite tray and voila! You’ve got a brand new seder plate!
Don’t forget to add some frog napkin rings to symbolize one of  the 10 plagues to adorn your linen napkins…
Now is the time to pull out your best cloths, napkins, china, and placemats. Be bold.
Be daring. Use creativity and  imagination. How are you going to spruce up your table this Passover 2013?

10 PASSOVER MUST-HAVES FOR THE JEWISH HOSTESS:

1.Why not make it after dinner cleanup quicker, easier and fun for kids? The crumber is the perfect item. This is a replica of what’s used in some of the fanciest restaurants in town, but even prettier! Call  (516)-374-1544 or email besy@aol.com to order.

2. The simplicity and elegance of Annie Glass as your  Passover dishes makes it a universally loved collection. The teudah from the Vaad of California stating that there is no coating on the glass, rather the gold and platinum are baked between layers of glass, means it can go from meat to dairy AND is dishwasher safe. I’m not sure which is more exciting. For a special Jewish Hostess discount, call  (516)-374-1544 or email besy@aol.com to order.

3. This is the first pot that you will want to use as a Passover serving dish! The shape and size will inspire you to make a stew or soup for your Passover seder menu. The  heavy duty aluminum with non-stick interior means even cooking throughout, and the intricate detail work on the handle and lid create a fantastic serving piece. For your  special Jewish Hostess 20% discount, call  (516)-374-1544 or email besy@aol.com.
Passover Pots, The Jewish Hostess
4. Your search for the perfect tray for matzah has ended! This wood and stainless tray by Namb’e is functional, sophisticated and durable. Made of acacia wood and Nambé alloy, this tray will be treasured for years to come. For a special Jewish Hostess discount, call  (516)-374-1544 or email besy@aol.com to order.
Matzo Tray, The Jewish Hostess
5. The most important part of Pessach is getting the kids involved!  These chocolate molds help create a fun tzefardaya dessert. Let the kids fill the mold with chocolate and drop in nuts,  or sprinkles! For a special Jewish Hostess discount, call  (516)-374-1544 or email besy@aol.com to order.

6.Fashion in the kitchen! The French bull storage container is my favorite, it’s a set of 3 nesting bowls with lids for easy storage. Use as a serving bowl without the lid! So many different patterns to choose from- it’s easy to tell your meat from dairy! For a special Jewish Hostess discount, call  (516)-374-1544 or email besy@aol.com to order.
Passover Storage Containers, The Jewish Hostess
7. Pessach is all about the dip bowls, between the charoses, marror, salt water, horseradish… the list goes on and on. You can never have enough! I happen to love these square bowls because they are clear so it’s easy to see across the table. They are lightweight to pass and stack perfectly! Pair it with and elegant and whimsical dip spoon and it makes the perfect gift! For a special Jewish Hostess discount, call  (516)-374-1544 or email besy@aol.com to order.
Glass Dishes for Passover, The Jewish Hostess

             ”Hi Marlene,

Hope this finds you well. I’m sending you some Passover tablescapes from years past.  Haha, no pun intended

Many Jewish families already have many of the kinds of items I used for this “Exodus from Egypt” themed table- various clay and brass pots and vases, and even wooden camels!  The palm leaves are from the plants in my front yard. Blue and black paired with gold and silver is reminiscent of ancient Egypt.  Metal bangle bracelets from the local flea market make awesome napkin rings. Finally a gold chain around the table with place cards tied to them remind us how we were chained together in bondage, and how we are bound together in our heritage.
Here are a few more ideas!
Covered Hagadot and flowers make an elegant spring theme for any Passover table!
Another favorite of mine, our Nile theme, with my version of Miriam and Yochevet looking on among the reeds (Ross finds!) Baby Moshe name card holders (below) add a whimsical touch for the young and young at heart!
If you like what you see please LIKE our page BSG TABLESCAPES on facebook for many good ideas.
Wishing you a happy and healthy Pesach!

Simply put, when we are faced with a simple mitzvah of putting out a holiday table for our family, one in which many berachot are said, and  in which holiday memories will be embedded in our children’s minds for years to come, the concept of beautifying that mitzvah is a huge one.  You’ve probably made the good deed of “Hiddur Mitzvah” without even realizing it. Beautiful sterling kiddush cups,  stunning menorahs and shabbat candles are a prime example.

Having company and no time to cook or bake like a  gourmet for Shavuot?

In my book, being a Jewish Hostess means getting delicious and kosher gourmet food on the table even if you didn’t have time or energy to cook or bake it yourself. The real reason for your beautiful table is to get the family and friends together for Jewish Holidays and family occasions, not to collapse on the couch after everyone leaves.

This Mother’s Day and Shavuot don’t be a slave in the kitchen.

If you live in the New York area, then you are in luck. I’ve chosen some of the best kosher cooks in the neighborhood that you can call for excellent appetizers, dishes, and desserts. All of  the talented women on this list are widely known in the Jewish community for their culinary skills.

How to Transform Holiday Centerpiece Snapshots Into Art

4 Comments 31 May 2011

Did you ever wish you could capture all of those gorgeous memories of your centerpieces during holidays past? Consider photographing them using interesting camera angles. Besides having a tangible visual reference that you can refer to, you may surprise yourself and create a work of art worthy to be enlarged and printed on plexi-glassto be hung on your walls.

During Passover, I hired Bettie Esses to create my flower arrangements. They were absolutely gorgeous and a few days later, I took the opportunity to practice my photography skills on these organic floral spring centerpieces.

Below are the centerpieces that were in the center of each square table. Simple trapezoid vases held orchid buds resting on a bed of colored rocks and stones. In trapezoid  vase # 1, I  arranged them in a row and photographed the vases in an angle to practice an interesting depth of field using a small aperture. For point and shoot users, the portrait setting may help create a similar affect of gradual blurring in the background. I photographed trapezoid vase # 2 from above using a small aperture. Again, point and shoot cameras on the portrait setting may give you that blurring effect.

Cylinder  photo # 3 is a simple photograph of what the two main centerpieces on my dining room table looked like. Each two foot long cylinder vase held a lone orchid stem completely immersed in water.  I took the photograph up a notch by standing on a chair to capture the circular shape of the mouth of the vase for an interesting perspective (cylinder photo # 2). Cylinder photo # 1 shows a closer perspective of the buds inside the vases.

Simply shifting your position and photographing your centerpieces from different perspectives  may wow you with an image your certainly proud of . Plus, don’t forget to play with your camera settings (like portrait setting or smaller apertures) for added interest.

Heather’s Vegan Seder Plate

Heather’s Vegan Seder Plate

No Comments 01 April 2011

Thank you Heather Nyack for your seder Pictures!
“We opted this year to move the table into the living room, as two of our guests are pregnant: Rachel Wedel Cruse, is 39 weeks, and my daughter Ashlianna Nyack, is 24 weeks with twins, and have the seder table between two couches, so the ladies could recline on the comfy couch. It made… for a much more relaxed seder not just for them, but for everyone. We also use the avacado pit option on the seder plate, instead of the lamb shank, as we are mostly vegetarian, and working towards becoming vegan. We have kids who cannot eat eggs — we let them have Kosher chocolate eggs for that portion of the seder. Finding ones that work for all the kosher/vegan/allergen issues though can be tough!”

Leigh Klein’s Passover Seder Inspiration

“Dear Marlene,
Here are pictures of our table. We have several children who attend and to keep them engaged and make things “fun” I include lots of props such as the 10 plague finger puppets (the adults usually fight over these) the 4 question finger puppets (one adult guest never took his off!) and frogs…lots and lots of frogs. I hide them everywhere and about half way through Seder they start flying. I found some little rubber frogs last fall and put them away for Seder, I folded them into all of the napkins as a little surprise!

Loving your Facebook Page and blog! They’ve been so helpful! Leigh Klein”
