The Ultimate Spring Detox-a Quick, Easy Way to Sugar Detox:

Every so often I meet someone on the street, in a restaurant or just in passing who would reach out to me and share their sugar detox challenge experience.

In case you’re not familiar with my Sugar Detox story, I would love to share it with you.

Even though I, like most people, have a difficult time expressesing the truth about my negative habits, I sum up the energy to do so, by thinking about my desire of a higher cause. The cause of helping others. I know my story will help hundreds if not thousands, possibly even millions. You see, it’s a ripple effect. If I can help someone from my experience, and that person helps someone else, a family, a community and possibly the world at large can benefit.

So here it goes…

April 2008 was the turning point for me. The month that changed my life.

In April 2008 I embarked on the biggest feat of my life. A 30 Day Sugar Detox Challenge.  You may have read my articles for each of those days on the Jewish Hostess blog, or followed me through my emails. The writings were raw. I was simply stating my experience. I didn’t have a plan, just a goal to complete 30 consecutive days sugar free. I, along with my group at the Sephardic Center, and my dedicated readers, embarked on a challenge that would change my life forever.

What was so exciting about being sugar free?  I could sum it up in one word, a word that most people search a life time for.  HAPPY.  When I became Sugar Free- I became HAPPY.

Yes, my life is filled with many things to make me feel happy.  I am blessed with a wonderful family and friends. I have a career in fitness that is extremely rewarding.   Yet, the only time that I am truly happy is when I am sugar free.

Why would living a life without sugar have such profound effects? Refined sugar does not benefit our bodies or mind in any way.

While it has many negative effects, like  rising triglcerdies significantly and suppressing the immune system, the biggest on my list is brain fog and mood swings that occur when you eat refined sugar. If you ever expirenced a brain fog- you know what I mean!

Without sugar in your system you can conquer the world! It is such an empowering feeling. Sugar brings you up for a short period of time, and then brings you down. Sometimes so down that you just need to sleep. If you ever over-ate a large meal, then you know what I’m talking about.

Without sugar, your brain can work with clarity. Focusing will become easy. This is especially helpful in children, who need to focus in school for 8 hours at a time. You will always have an even temperament, and trying to lose weight will become a thing of the past.

After helping hundreds of women, I decided to attain my degree from the American Associastion of Drugless Practicioners and enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.

Being a health coach and a fitness professional has helped me to gain access to help so many more people in our community. By blending my two careers, my clients are able to reap many rewards. I truly feel blessed.

If your are ready to have more energy, fewer cravings and take control of your life, then you don’t want to miss my most amazing event yet.

Wheatgrass- “The Next Big Thing”

3 Comments 27 June 2010

According to Albert Bijou, the  owner and health guru of Back to Nature, wheatgrass juice is “the next big thing”.  It can be mixed with any fruit smoothie or you can drink it straight up. Albert is offering all Jewish Hostess readers $1. off of  any wheatgrass shot!

Read on….

WHO ON EARTH CAME UP WITH THE IDEA TO START EATING GRASS, FOR G-D’S SAKE?
WELL, SO YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT IS WAS DR. ANN WIGMORE WHO POPULARIZED THE USE OF FRESH WHEATGRASS JUICE FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION BACK IN THE EARLY 1970’S. SHE FIRST EXPERIMENTED ON HERSELF AND FOUND THAT BY EATING GRASSES SHE WAS ABLE TO CURE GANGRENE IN HER LEG. THEN AT HER HEALTH INSTITUTE, SHE GREW HER OWN WHEATGRASS INDOORS AND SERVED THE JUICE TO HER MANY GUESTS WHO TURNED TO HER FOR HELP AFTER EXHAUSTING CONVENTIONAL MEDICAL TREATMENTS. WHEATGRASS JUICE HAS SINCE HELPED THOUSANDS TO RECOVER FROM SERIOUS ILLNESSES.

WHAT DOES WHEATGRASS DO?
It helps increase a person’s stamina, build healthy blood, cleanse the whole system, aid digestion, make bowel movements regular, reduce cravings for addictive substances, improve fertility, inhibit the growth of disease causing bacteria and the activity of cancer-causing chemicals as well as ease practically every physical and mental ailment you would expect to encounter among people who are not properly nourished.

WHAT IS ITS NUTRIONAL VALUE?
Wheatgrass juice has as much vitamin C as citrus fruits and is as high in vitamin A as dark green lettuce or carrots. It’s an excellent source of B-vitamins, including laetrile, and contains vitamin E and K as well. Wheatgrass juice contains all the minerals in healthy soil, over 100, including calcium, iron, sodium, potassium, magnesium, and a variety of trace minerals such as selenium and zinc. It also contains all eight essential amino acids, also known as the building blocks of protein. Young wheatgrass contains more enzymes than at any other stage of growth. It has simple sugar, which accounts for its sweet taste. But wait; as if all this wasn’t enough, the solid portion of the wheatgrass juice is 70% chlorophyll – condensed sun energy and the world’s most effective body protector and healer.

Whip Up Your Own Frozen Treat Today!

1 Comment 25 May 2010

You don’t have to risk a $75 parking ticket just to run in to get your Frogurt, Tasti, or Pinkberry.  This dairy-free frozen treat is  homemade , 100 percent fruit, and practically free.  Chopped nuts add crunch and protein to this creamy snack. Artificial afternoon treats melt in comparison to this “banana fro-yo” adapted from one of our  favorite sites, Skinny In The City.

Total Prep Time: 2-3 hours (freezing bananas)

Total Cook Time:
5-7 minutes

Serves: 1

Ingredients:
* 2 small sized frozen bananas (approx 6”), peeled and cut into chunks
* ½ oz (1/8th cup or 12 almonds) raw almonds, chopped

Equpiment:

Food Processor

Directions:
1. Cut bananas into chunks and place in freezer until frozen (approximately 2 to 3 hours.)
2. Take the bananas and put them in your food processor.
3. Turn the processor on and let it run for about five to seven minutes, stopping every now and then to scrape it down. (The bananas should get increasingly light, fluffy, and smooth, resembling a creamy bowl of soft serve.)
4. Scoop them into a bowl, sprinkle ½ oz chopped raw almonds on top and enjoy!

*For an extra treat drizzle one half teaspoon chocolate syrup on top!

Nutrition Content:
Per Serving with Almonds (approx 1 cup): 262 calories, 7.5g fat, 49g carb, 7g fiber, 5g protein, 2mg sodium, 45g calcium, 826mg potassium

DAY 4 ON OUR “30 Day Sugar Detox Challenge!”

healthy body, healthy living

DAY 4 ON OUR “30 Day Sugar Detox Challenge!”

No Comments 12 April 2010

How are YOU doing so far?
Eliminating sugar from our diet can be very rewarding. I find that one of the greatest benefits is that you wind up choosing healthier food choices because your not filling up on foods that have simple sugars in its ingredients, also known as “empty calories.”

I must confess that I am finding this experience to be an extremely  satisfying one.  The emails and comments that I  receive  motivate me to keep on writting! Women are  sharing  with me either their challenges or questions about details in their diet which clue me in to the fact that everyone  wants to adhere to the strictest letter of our law!

Some expressed that even though they are not joining in the challenge, they are reading the e-mails and are motivated to possibly try it at another time of their life.

Others  revealed that their kids are getting involved and trying to eliminate sugar from their diets. While other woman feel “like fabulous roll models to their children and husbands by taking good heath care of themselves.”

Where ever YOU are in our Detox Challenge its ALL GOOD!

Thank you for reading, participating and sharing.

I love the questions-though please be patient with the answers as I’m getting lots of them!

Q: Can we eat dairy products such as low fat mozzarella cheese or cottage cheese.

A. Yes! Low fat or fat free dairy products are fine.  We are aiming for a healthy diet that promotes all food groups.

A recent study showed that the more servings of dairy foods that adults consumed, the greater the percentage of their total calories that came from saturated fat (definitely not a good thing).

But the other side to the story is that their intake of many key nutrients — like protein, calcium, magnesium , folate, B1, B2, B6, B12, and vitamins  A, D, and E — also increased along with the number of dairy servings.

So how do you get all those great nutrients from dairy without the drawbacks?

Low-fat dairy is the answer! As you decrease the fat in dairy products, you cut calories, saturated fat, and cholesterol , while protein, calcium, and most other vitamins and minerals remain high.

Low-fat milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, and reduced-fat cheese pack a protein and calcium punch in every serving. Just a cup of lite nonfat yogurt, for example, gives you a third of your daily recommended calcium intake, along with 17% of your estimated daily protein intake.

I realise that many people don’t eat dairy. To those I simply recommend obtaining those same nutritious vitamins from other sources. Such as; dark leafy greens for calcium, beans for protein and spinach for folate.

To my “Sugar Detox Buddies”

 – I was successful on day 2, 3 and 4. (Friday, Saturday and Sunday!) My mind feels strong and determined. My body is starting to feel lighter. I am so ready for the days ahead!
